Wake Forest Class of 2025 — Regular Decision

We visited in spring of 2019 and had plans to return in spring 2020, and for S to interview on campus in June 2020. But obviously Covid changed the latter two intentions.

If the school doesn’t want people on campus now, I would respect their preference. The campus is small enough that it would be easy to identify a parent or two walking around with a teen. And, again, the greater good is what is desired here.

To try and offset the lack of info others who want a tour but may never get one are looking for, I can offer a little bit of insight about the campus. It’s beautiful. It’s well-manicured, well-maintained, no trash anywhere (minus a pizza slice that clearly had fallen by accident near a dorm building entrance, and no doubt a squirrel would be taking off with it soon!). The students were casually but cleanly dressed (no one looked like they just rolled out of bed). Students and staff were friendly, courteous, helpful. During lunch time, DH and I sat and ate alongside the main green lawn courtyard and a professor or two had their dogs out running around, and interacting with students, etc. It was like Disney College in some respects. I mean that in a good way. S, H and I all felt happy, upbeat and pleasantly surprised at how much we liked everything we heard and observed. We could definitely picture our S being a student there.

(Disclaimer: I almost ended up at WF for grad school MANY years ago, but it would have been for terminal master’s degree and I was also applying to doctorate programs. When I received an admissions from the latter, I chose to decline my WF acceptance but part of me was quite sad about that at the time!)

Dorms we didn’t get to see but all said they were fine. Again, I was most struck by the positive energy seen and observed, the kindness and friendliness of all, the focused feel of the students on campus, and the neatness (well-maintained) feel of the small campus and its students.

The two drawbacks to WF that we observed were: (1) little diversity - very white campus when we visited and seemingly wealthy (as also reflected by the vehicles in the student parking areas). Our S is Hispanic (we adopted him as a newborn) and prefers much diversity (as do we) and yet H saw this as no reason not to pursue applying to WF at all. He liked everything he saw on the tour (and a couple hours after the tour of walking around with a student we knew who attended there, just he and our S) so much that he didn’t mind that it wasn’t as diverse as some of the other schools he applied to.

The other drawback was distance to an airport. Not a big deal, but sure, a school that has an airport within 30 minutes would be ideal. (Some of the schools he is applying to are much more easily accessible.) This drawback was not something that would dissuade us or S from considering WF if he gets accepted. And, to be honest, I can’t recall how far it was from the airport, but in my mind it was farther than I would prefer. But I’m just being a bit picky.

HTH.

My DD is a sophomore, Greensboro (GSO) airport is only 30 minutes away. American, United + other airlines all operate flights from GSO

We have flown to and from Greensboro, Charlotte, and Raleigh. Greensboro is certainly closer (30 minutes). Has fewer flights from our home city (Tampa). But it still works. Normally we fly in and out of Raleigh on American (like 20 flights per day). Used to be a pain with all the road construction but that has lessoned. Our last trip was in November and it only took 1 hour 20 minutes to get to WS (used to be at least 2 hours with construction traffic). So not bad at all.

Also, as @marrast stated, the coursework is challenging but doable. I also have a senior who has been very active in ECs and is a finance major (finance is quant heavy at Wake) and politics/ international affairs minor. He has hovered at 3.5 throughout his four years. He was an all A student in HS. I’ve asked him what it would take to get more As than A- or B+. It’s doable but he would have to put in more time (puts in a good amount, but nothing crazy) consistently which he feels would take away from his other endeavors. He doesn’t want to do that. College is about the whole experience, not just the grades. He’s had / having a wonderful four yrs and is set up well to start his career. Definitely has learned a lot, both in his areas of study and about himself personally.

How does your S get from the Raleigh airport to Wake?

@homerdog Sorry, I meant Charlotte. He has had friends drive him to and from the Charlotte airport. Has also shared an uber with a van full which reduced the per person cost to around $25. We have flown in to Raleigh when the timing or pricing was better. It’s about 90 minutes to campus and would definitely be my third choice based on distance.

That’s helpful. Southwest flies to Charlotte!

I you’re a private pilot there is an airport about 10 mins from campus.

Lol! That made me smile!

How many Stamps scholars per year are there in Wake?

Website for Stamps says about 15 for each entering class.

Thanks - I should have looked it up. There had been so many rejections (missing semi-finalists, etc. from other schools) so far that I don’t want to get my hopes up anymore.

What do you mean? Do you know whether emails regarding finalists have been sent out?

i just edited the OP; I meant from other schools/scholarship opportunities.

When RD decisions come out? Are they rolling? I saw April 1 as a date. On our ED portal it says scholarships will come out in March but I don’t know if that’s for RD too.

Last year RD decisions came on 3/20. I believe scholarship info comes more like first week of March so, if you get that nod, then you know you are in.

If you get accepted there is a great FB parents page with just about anything you could possibly want to know and also a great GroupMe the kids are connecting on.

Yes, there is a very active and informative parents FB page. My DD joined a GroupMe for accepted students for class of ‘23 that turned out to be more annoying than helpful, however she ended up connecting with ‘23’s on Instagram before arriving on campus.

There is a group who is letting students who applied RD and have not been accepted yet post and communicate as well. If this is your first or second choice, or you just want to know more about the potential student body before you make a decision, I definitely recommend joining. It’s just Wake Forest University Class of 2025. Before you join, they ask if you have followed one specific Instagram account and that is all. Definitely recommend to anyone on the fence/wondering more about what the students who apply to Wake Forest are like!

Does wake require mid year grades for ED2 or RD ? My portal shows all reqd items checked but I thought I remembered their website saying mid year grades but I can’t find it now.

You can upload them yourself in the portal. We added them for ED when we received them. Can’t confirm if it’s required or not.
