WAMC: UCLA, Berkeley

Hi,
I am from Philadelphia, and ever since 8th grade, I have heavily been into the UC school system. Right now, my realistic target GPA for applying is a 4.09. I had a bad Freshman year, but have steadily improved my last 3 school years. I do go to a college prep/private school if that changes anything. As far as ECs go, I have played 4 years of varsity ice hockey, was elected leader of one of the 7 “houses” at my school, 7 men out of the 70 in my class are elected to by faculty, and the past leaders to lead a house of about 75 students. Other than president, it is the most prestigious leadership position at my school, I am the president of two clubs, and am the editor in chief at the school newspaper. My SAT score was a 2150, and ACT was a 33. I took 16 semesters of UC approved AP/Honors classes. As far as volunteer work goes, I travel to a underprivileged neighborhood in Philadelphia and tutor students at one of the schools once a week, and also am a senior leader in my schools community service organization.

Please tell me if either UCLA or Berkeley are realistic schools for me!

*Don’t know if this helps, but I spent a summer at UCLA studying and plan to include my experience there in my personal essay to express my passion for the school.

Thanks!

You have good stats, not to mention passion, which is powerful in boosting the admission’s perception of you. I’d say UCLA and UCB are reache

You have the stats, but applying out of state for UCs is hard to chance (I’m from Philly too and a couple of kids from my school have gone to UCs). I’ve seen people with a 30 on their ACTs get into UCLA, and one with a 34 get rejected, simply because of major. So, depending on your major, your essays, and your ECs (Try to stand out! The UCs like very unique ECs and a fresh view on the world), you have a 50/50 chance.

Though your stats are ok so far but don’t limit yourself to those two top UCs as they are becoming crapshoots nowadays!
Consider other UCs as well!

^This. I heard a kid getting into UCLA but getting rejected from UIUC.
