wanna know anything about the Bio program?

I'm a 3rd year Bio major at UCI. Hopefully, I can answer some of ur questions... =)

What GE's did you do and how difficult was your Freshmen year?

Aren't GE's are the same for every major at UCI o.0

^^Nope. 0.0

That's what the tour guide said >_> lol

http://www.reg.uci.edu/registrar/soc/breadth.html

There are three different sets of requirements, breadth, school, and major. Breadth is the same for all students for the class (ie. the incoming class of 2010). School is the same for all students in your class within the school, and major, well you know the drill by now.

Oh, thanks for the clarification lol

wahtst the differnce between a biosci major and biomedical major
are the GEs the same?
what about upper level courses.

what are your stats as a high schooler, and what are your stats now?

biomedical engineering http://www.editor.uci.edu/05-06/engr/engr.4.htm#gen20

bio sci http://www.editor.uci.edu/05-06/bio/bio.2.htm

in highschool..i barely tried ...most of the time i was playing starcraft =P...except for senior year 1st semester in which i sort of tried..My 10-12 UC GPA was 3.87......Im trying pretty damn hard at UCI and I have almost a 3.7.

Shoot, that's really good...

zotty, have my children--I beg of you.

You scare me Oyama.

As well, I should.

There's some pretty wierd people attending UCI (post #13) - makes me start to regret sending in my SIR.

Anyway, couple of questions that you can hopefully answer:

Do you have to apply (be relatively competitive) to get into majors such as neurobiology etc?

Are there a lot of premeds in bio?

How can a freshman go about seeking a research position?

LOL! Don't worry. Oyama is going to UCSD =).

1: I don't think there's anything particularly competitive about premed/bio majors. The medical school is the hard stuff. You will have to go through the usual weeder classes and such, but I don't think there is much to worry about it.

2: Because every parent says "go to the medical field," I'm sure there are PLENTY of students planning on going to medical school. Just look at the students at your school. Most of them should say, "Oh, I'm going to shoot for medical school." And with that, they go to bio majors.

3: I hear you can get research positions by getting to know your professors and such. There is also that UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Porgram) at UCI so that will help you out a lot. I heard some engineering majors start researching freshman year. How? I wish I knew.

At UCLA, getting a research position is only a talk away from your counselor/professor, according to my tour guide on Admit Day.

I haven't heard anything about UCI, UCSD, or any of the other UCs, however.

And when applying for Neurobiology and other foci, you should still try and be competitive. Going into Med school is just like first going to college. You still have to apply to get in and being competitive in college will allow you to do more things: you'll be offered better and more internships dealing with the medical field which, in turn, will provide more substance for resumes/applications to colleges; the second is essentially that being competitive forces you to be at the top of your field, making graduate studies easier as you are more well-prepared.

Med school is highly competitive no matter what school you plan to attend, so you're constantly being forced to compare yourself to others in your field of work, too.

---Edit+

Well, Jason, I do have a myriad of friends attending UCI in the fall, so I'll be on-campus a bit, anyway. I can promise anyone if they spend a day with me, they'll get used to my sense of humor quickly (ask Jaywin and Heylookitsme--they practically live with me everyday).

Yeah, he has a point there lol Unless you really get to know Oyama, his antics would probably scare you away. (It sure took me a while >_>)

Haha, maybe I'll meet you Oyama. That would be cool. I don't percieve you as scary. I've gotten used to you over CC ;) , hahaha.
