Want to study history at CMU...

Hello everyone!
Ok- gpa unweighted is 3.94ish and weighted out of 4.5 is 4.17.
Based on PSAT scores I imaging I will get 2100-2200 on the sat.
I sing in choir and participate in many in and out of school advanced orchestras (viola player). I volunteer at a local historic house and am the secretary of my schools Model UN club. I spent the jtst half of my junior year (this year) in Seitzerlamd with my family and that's what I'm writing my essay about.
I am female and jewish from southern New England and go to a top public high school. I plan on being a history major wherever I end up going.
Thanks everyone!

Any thoughts? Please? :)

Why CMU for history? It’s not really known as one of their strengths.

It’s a back up school. I want to go to University of Chicago and Cornell mainly.

There are a lot of schools I would recommend for History, but CMU is not one of them. Even as a backup school the program is fairly weak with a pretty small course offering. Consider applying to a LAC or Emory/Vanderbilt/Tulane or Georgetown or George Washington as your backups?

Hey hey CMU actually has a pretty solid history program. People forget about CMU’s humanities and social science stuff, but they do some really great things. Every program at cmu has a quantitative bent, so its not a typical history program. And there is a ton of research. They have a really cool major in ethics, history, and public policy too. I do agree that course offerings are somewhat limited, however, in terms of how many are offered per semester. You’ll get in most likely, I wouldn’t worry about that. Admission to dietrich isn’t too crazy.

For many programs yes, there is a quantitative bent, but history is definitely not one of them.

With regards to there being “a ton of research”: I don’t think that’s true. There are 3 required research-component courses for the entire program, and I have not been aware of many ongoing research opportunities open to students within humanities. Short of an internship or independent study (which you could do at any school) I don’t think research opportunities are freely available.

I say this as someone who just graduated from Dietrich myself: I love the college, I loved my major, but my major was not history and I would not recommend history to anyone serious about pursuing ONLY history. If you want to double major in CS or IS or business or something, sure, CMU’s a great place to be. if you just want to solo-major history… look elsewhere.

Ok, that’s fair. It’s definetly a small department, and I’m a freshman, so my understanding of the offerings is probably not very well informed. I’m sorry. It does seem that history majors do pretty well with graduate school…they have gone in the past to CMU, University of Michigian, University of Pitssburgh, Harvard, Penn, etc. I’ve also learned more about the EHPP program than the general history program, and I overgeneralized. That program draws on the decision science program, economics program, engineering and public policy programs, etc, so it’s probably a different deal. For the record, I’m not in either program, I just considered adding the EHPP major, and I have friends in the global studies program.
