I was at a 4 year university with a reputation of being brutally difficult (it’s a top 15 us news ranked one yadda yadda, if you really wanna know which one pm me) so it was extremely hard. i had a unit limit there of 16.5 credits but took 18 plus I took an online class. It was extremely difficult and first semester I got a 3.3 (it’s also an east coast school and I’m a socal native so i had awful culture shock). Second semester I did way better: I made the Dean’s List with a 3.65. I would honestly just spend two years at cc. it’s cheaper and you can get more involved in EC’s to bolster your app. I had a decent amount of EC’s like newspaper staff writer, on a sports team, in a sorority, fem alliance, but it was really really really hard (obvi as GPA proves). I was somehow able to make great friends but I had to decline A LOT of opportunities to go out and have fun and I had almost daily breakdowns where I’d call my mom sobbing wanting to come home. Again, though, I was across the country and I hated it.

@losthope You need 60 units in order to transfer. Seeing that you only have 5 from your AP, yes, it’s going to be difficult for you to transfer in one year. However, if you’re really determined, then I say go for it. I was worried also about not getting good grades while taking heavy course loads, but I mean, I had nothing else going on for me but my education so all my time was spent on school. I did almost no extracurricular activities/volunteering. All my time was spent on school school school. Since you’ll need to complete 55 units before next spring, I suggest you apply to multiple community colleges, including those that are on the quarter system and have a winter session. You’re going to need to do something like 21 units in the fall, 8 units during winter, 21 units in the spring. When choosing your classes (right now is a great time to start researching and planning btw), try to combine your sociology prereqs with IGETC requirements. That way you’ll be tackling two things at the same time. For me, psychology and IGETC overlapped a lot so I was lucky.

@Lachan1 I took 18 units in the Fall and 21 units in the Spring. Surprisingly, 21 units last semester was easier than 18 in the Fall. I think it’s because when you enter college, you experience a culture shock since it’s a new environment. Be prepared for that, and don’t let it get to you. Also, I think Spring was easier because I chose easier professors/classes. Always use Rate My Professor to choose your professors. Also, choose classes that interest you. The more you like learning the stuff, the easier it is.

Im really happy there is a thread for this!

Anyways, I am trying to transfer to UCLA in one year and Ill spend my first year at a CCC. I have 3 units (passed APUSH) so my target is 57 units. I know I have to take summer school but right now I have 2 classes (7 units) and I am on the waitlist for 2 more. so if I were to get my 2 other classes which I probably will I would have 14 units (Im also going to crash the first week to try and get as many classes as possible), and I also plan on taking 2-3 classes online a semester. My major is pre-med so I know its going to be tough, but I am ready for the hard work. Also I was going to call UCLA about which online colleges they would recommend for me to take courses at. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

@Nickkwooddd — HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Are kidding me? You want 57 units in 2 semesters? And you are only locked into 7 units for sure this fall? Most UC’s do not allow summer to make the 60 unit requirement. Goooood luuuck bro!

@PirateXking I have already talked to UCLA and they do allow you to reach 60 units and transfer if you reach the units by the beginning of the fall, obviously I wouldnt be able to do 57 units in 2 semesters…

If you are serious about premed than you can not be serious about completing 57 semester units in one year. There are two things that get you invited for an interview when applying to medical school and they are undergraduate GPA and MCAT scores. The minimum acceptable GPA for most medical schools is probably 3.6 with a MCAT score of 30 and no score lower than 9 on any of the three parts. Whether their suspicions are valid or not, many medical schools believe that CCs lack the academic rigor of four schools so if you take any medical school prerequisites at your CCC you absolutely can not less than an A in each course. Do not take any of your medical school prerequisites online. Again, there presumptions may be mistaken but medical schools know nothing about the rigor of online courses and some medical schools may not be aware that internet courses even exist.

You should also be aware that if are taking that many units it might be more than you can handle and you will end up with some Ds, Fs and Ws. While you can still make things all right with the UCs through Academic Renewal and retaking the course and replacing your failing grades and withdrawals that is not the case with medical school applications. All medical schools use AAMCAS to evaluate your transcripts and calculate your GPA and they will use every college level class you have ever taken. If you use academic renewal AAMCAS will still use the failing grades you originally received to compute your GPA. If you fail a class and retake it with a passing grade the UCs only consider the replacement grade, AAMCAS will include both grades. Finally, while the UCs seem to be willing to tolerate an almost unlimited number of Withdrawals without it affecting your chance of admission. On the other hand most medical schools looking at your transcripts sees every W as an F.

@Nickk - No, UCLA does not allow for summer sessions to used to reach the 60 unit mark. So I highly doubt anybody in the UCLA office would tell you otherwise. UCLA is without a doubt one of the top schools in the UC system. They have to turn away hundreds, if not thousands, of applications that have all of the necessary requirements completed already.

[University of California - Deadlines for completing courses](http://universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/transfer/requirements/deadlines-courses/index.html)

I want to do one year transfer as well. With my AP and summer CC classes I have 22 semester units already. In the fall 2012, I am taking 17 units and in the spring of 2013 I will take 21 units. When I apply for UCLA this November, I should have 60 units. However, in case I drop one class in the spring of 2013 to protect my GPA and assume I get straight A’s, I assume UCLA will accept me. If I drop one class in the spring, do I need to report to UCLA right away or will they reject me after I get admitted or can I make up this class in the summer of 2013. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Congratulation to all one-year-transfer… I’m glad to know about this topic.
I have some concerns about choosing course load for this Spring to transfer ASAP. My major is BioChem or Chem.

When you take 18-21+ units, are they IGETC courses or major prerequisites courses? Would it be impossible to have Math, Bio, Chem and English together in one semester? I just moved to the US for a year so I’m afraid of the “craziness” of these classes. Will it affect my GPA?

I am trying to have all of my major courses in Fall and Spring. In the summer, I would take PHYSICS (only) and then all of the IGETC course? Will UCs accept my summer course units? (I know that some of the UCs do, and some don’t)

If there are any tips on balancing the schedule, I would love to know them… I just got a job at a tutor center and I really want to keep it along with my course load. Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you so much!

Hey I am transferring in one year and I have a Thread up already but I was wondering How understanding they are when you have a limited amount of classes factoring into your gpa at the time of applying? By the time they see my application it will be this semesters grades plus 2 classes i took senior year and summer after.
- Do they understand less than A’s when you are still in highschool?
The reason I ask is including this semester I will have
5 A’s
2 C’s (one in 1st sem senior year the other summer of graduation)
and do AP’s factor in any way into the GPA? I doubt they do but just wondering.
I’m kind of worried because just one unlucky teacher in my Wr1 Class (i was one of the few to pass) over the summer so I got a C I lose a lot of GPA and then a C from japanese 1 drops me more.
If its based on grade points/ number of classes i should be fine with a 3.4 but if its
sum of(grade point X unit #)/total units then I drop considerably.

Also would Eagle Scout and a Criminal Justice Youth Academy (was not part of the high school in fact I got like .3 units from it haha) I did count towards EC’s?

Are any of you guys still possibly around to answer any questions?!

I have also (hopefully) managed to transfer in one year as an engineering major. I’ve applied for fall 2014 to most UC’s and tagged to UCI. It’s only possible to pull off if you have College Credits and AP credits before graduating high school, plus a ton of motivation. I will have 63 units done by the end of the spring semester, and I think I have 13 extra units from AP tests. Feel free to ask me for advice or questions on how to transfer in a year!

how do you record all the college courses you’ve taken during high school in the UCtap?

Congrats! @berkeleyappeal ! Your hard work paid off. But you say you just got accepted and the word appeal
Is in your handle. So, I assume you appealed. Could you explain what you wrote in your appeal letter? Thx.

Hi all, I was wondering if this thread’s active. Are there anyone out there who can answer a few questions of mine regarding this thread’s topic. Thanks in advance.
