Was deferred in December, now I'm accepted for the SPRING of 2018 - where should I go first?

Hey everyone. Last week I received an update on my information for FSU, and was puzzled to see that I had been accepted for Spring of 2018 after being deferred in December.

For some reason, I can’t find the the page displaying this information anywhere on the site, after viewing it just last week(my application has since been updated to say I was accepted for the spring term, which is probably why.

Essentially, this means I have to attend another university in the fall and complete a set of basic courses, and start in the spring. I will receive no financial aid, and will likely not get housing in campus.

Unfortunately, this just makes my college decision more complicated. FSU was my fallback school, as well as UCF which I was accepted to. I’ve been waitlisted by every other school(there are several).

So, what do you guys suggest? As of now, my choices are to take classes for 6 months at either UCF, TCC, HCC(in Tampa, where I live), or, I chance the waitlists of several, much more difficult colleges. What do you all suggest?

I forgot to mention - although I’m not really the partying type, my mother is 100% against me attending FSUPCB for the first six months for that very reason(my dad couldn’t care less, he just wants me to go to FSU). This is likely not an option for this reason. This is their primary offer, however. I’ll try and find the article to explain further.

FSU had a record number of applicants this year, up 16 percent over last year. That’s one reason why you were deferred if your stats were a bit lower. (their average ACT was 29, and average GPA 4.1) Congrats on your spring admission!

If you have your sights set on FSU, then I’d take some general education coursework at HCC near your home. That’s a cheap and easy way to get a head start on your college GPA/course requirements. Get on the waiting list for housing. Students DO transfer or drop out for a variety of reasons, so you might be able to get a spot on campus for the spring semester. If not, there are various people looking for roommates at ALL times of year on FSU’s housing Facebook page and other sites.

As far as waitlist for the tougher schools, there’s no reason why you can’t wait it out and see what happens. If you get in to one of them, then you can decide if that school makes sense financially and otherwise.

I would NOT start taking classes at UCF for Fall semester, unless your intention is to enroll there instead of FSU.

Good luck, sounds like you have some good options!

You have another option. Don’t go anywhere in the fall. Use it to work a part time job and pad your savings some. You might appreciate that extra cash at some point in the future.

If you really want to use that time to knock out some credits, I agree with @Trisherella. Don’t waste your time, effort, or money going to UCF just to take some general education requirements. You can knock those out at your local community college before heading to FSU in the spring.

You’ll want to contact FSU’s admissions office about this. Accepting starting in the spring may limit your course options in the fall at other colleges.

There will be some housing available. FSU knows approximately how many students are going to move out after the fall- either by graduating, transferring, studying abroad, or failing out, which is why they accept some students for spring.

Do you qualify for either of the Bright Futures scholarships? If you go to HCC, you should be able to apply those funds.

I would go to TCC… It’s in the same town, and they are heavily tied…
