Was I accepted?

I recently got a postcard from UR that read, "Congratulations on your admission to the University of Rochester! You and your family are cordially invited to a celebrator event for admitted students in your area." It went on to state information not relevant to my purpose here.

Although I would consider myself a very strong college applicant, especially in terms of extracurriculars, I never applied to UR! I scored fairly well on the AMC/AIME (118.5, 6) this year and gave information to colleges, but I think that's all they'd have on me. Nothing on my personal life or grades.

Is this a fluke? I assume that it is. Obviously, I'm acting a bit irrational at the moment and fantasizing that I for whatever reasons was invited in (I'm a sophomore in high school who can't wait to go to college). Do colleges ever accept people who didn't apply? I've read about this in other threads on this website.

Could someone please connect the dots or slap me in the face and tell me to wake up?

Thank you,
Brian

By the way, I’ve been on their mailing list for a while and have responded to numerous pieces of mail and I think written at some point about how I love math - not that I think this will make a large difference.

Also, my math teacher (who I talk to often and has really helped me in my outside-school mathematical pursuits) is a UR alumnus who volunteers for admissions in the region. This might be some kind of reason, but I would find it highly unlikely that she recommended me or something just because I’ve talked to her about how cool UR would be a few times.

Just some extra data that might fill the picture a bit.

Obviously, I’d love to go! I’m just curious if this was a mistake or if anyone else has had this happen to them before. The postcard correctly had my address and name.

Brian,

If you are a current high school sophomore, then this is clearly an error on our behalf. Please call our Admissions Office on Monday and hopefully we can figure this out.

(P.S. - I heard from a member of our Communications Team that we accidentally mailed similar-sounding letters to a few students in California, perhaps you were one of them? If not, I would appreciate a private message so we could isolate the problem. Sorry for the mistake.)
