This is actually for a friend. My friend was recently in an accident and will have to stay in bed for the next 1-2 months. The problem is that we are almost done with the semester-- 1.5 months left. What will have happen with the classes he is currently taking? Will he get F's or will they let him retake the classes? Will they allow him to stay at home and take the tests even if he does not show up to class? I will talk to our school on Monday, but I'm hoping someone on here has some experience with this type of situation? What's the official policy at your school? We are at a community college in SoCal.

My school allows medical leaves of absence.

Depending on the exact situation, a person in your friends situation would be allowed to choose to finish some classes (ie if they could reasonably take the exams from bed), get I’s (incompletes) and finish the classes when they return, or have the classes completely wiped from their record.
I’d imagine for someone in your friends situation there might be a combination of the three depending on the class/professor.

I’d like to second Johnson181. Most likely your friend will have the following options:
- take an Incomplete for now and finish the work later.
- withdraw from his classes and receive no credit.

If he could keep up with the work from home, he could also try to stay on top of the assignments and take his exams with everyone else, but that seems challenging and is likely to wreak havoc with his GPA.

I had a situation several years ago with a student who was hospitalized partway through the semester. We taped the class lectures and sent him the homework (along with a nice card from the class) and he was able to keep up with the work. There may be ways to use technology to let your friend finish at least some classes that way.

I had a medical situation come up just before spring break. I withdrew from my classes (receiving a grade of W as it was way after drop deadline). Your friend has time to make the semester up in the future. If bed rest is required for over a month, I wouldn’t worry about school. The semester isn’t close enough to being over to learn the rest independently.
