Was weather a factor in choosing a boarding school?

Just curious with all the winter storms and cold temps, did weather play any part in your selection/admission decision?
Any schools that are notoriously hard travel wise in the winter?
Maybe I just have S.A.D., but those California boarding schools are very appealing right about now…

@TheStig2‌ You are not alone in that thought!

Same!! I need some California action right now. ~O)

In a manner of speaking, yes.

Since I’m from Europe and, at the time, would have been travelling as an unaccompanied minor (unofficially; we never actually used the service), one of the parameters in choosing a boarding school was that it had to be accessible from an airport that had direct service to Europe, which eliminated Bradley, Manchester, and Albany airports, among others. However, this was purely from a logistics perspective, not because I couldn’t handle 90" of snow on the ground.

New England born and raised, I’m itching to scedaddle. But, if BS comes through, I will happily endure three more northeast winters.

If I get accepted, am excited for the snow!!! SOOOO EXCITED FOR NE SNOW!!! JUST SO SO EXCITED TO PLAY IN THE SNOW!!! And yes… I just turned 15…

Nothing would make my kid happier than to be able to ski at school , so I guess so.

@LifeLongNYer You can ski at my school but it’s just hard to find time :frowning: When you do it’s super fun.

Yes. Right now in Ojai (home to Thacher), wherever you walk you smell the perfume of the orange trees (amazing), wild sage, chaparral etc. Breeze is warm and gentle, highs in the mid-upper 70’s, lows in the 40’s at night. Birdsong everywhere. Happy dogs. Grazing horses. Incredible light in the morning and pink sunsets at night. It’s the kind of weather that you dream about. And a far cry, especially this winter, from our home in Portland, Maine. It has a huge, positive impact on people’s moods, hardworking boarding school students in particular!

Hey, Thatcherparent-- sitting here in Massachusetts, getting ready for -6 degrees tonight, 3-5 inches more snow tomorrow, reading your post about orange blossoms. I know you’re comparing Ojai to Maine, but that’s the first post you’ve ever posted that I thought was really really mean

You’re making me really jealous! Right now I’m freezing in my room, wearing three layers. Sometimes it gets so cold in my room that I have to wear my winter coat. X( @ThacherParent

I LOVE SNOW SO MUCH JUST SO SO MUCH!

In Massachusetts it’s supposed to reach a high of 31 degrees tomorrow, but we’re getting quite a bit of snow. I can’t wait until spring arrives!

@goldenfygg heatwave, huh? XD

I’m with @daykidmom I am feeling like @thacherparent is mean!! Especially since its not like I can go to BS because I would head straight out there and never look back!

@uibutton he wants a ski team!

@LifeLongNYer cool!! This January there was a group of kids who went skiing past a building on campus that was ALL WINDOWS… Needless to say it was obvious to tell the beginners from the more experienced ones! It looked fun but I will never be that skilled haha.

K2 says his BS is a lot like the movie The Shining during the winter months. On more than one occasion he has said that he fully expects to turn the corner one day and run into the twins…

^ yikes! Redrum, redrum…

Haha @ThacherParent! With a daughter at Cate, I understand that you’re not being mean, just honest  GMCkid sends me sunset photos almost daily…

Weather wasn’t a factor for us, but it has ended up being more important than anticipated. Whenever GMCkid hit a low point, she found comfort in being outdoors in such beautiful surroundings. The school definitely emphasizes and encourages outdoor pursuits as a counterpoint to academics & athletics. Many days after sports, GMCkid takes a bus 5 minutes into town (Carpinteria) to pick up supplies, Starbucks, or whatever and TAKE A WALK ON THE BEACH. BS is a very intense, 24/7 type of experience, and the ability to be outdoors in beautiful surroundings is a huge stress-reliever. So, although warm weather wasn’t a consideration for us initially, it has turned out to be a real positive.

I would also say that Cate’s outdoor program, and it’s emphasis on taking risks and trying new things (like hiking, camping, etc. for my city kid) was a big reason why we loved the school, along with Thacher. Both schools do a fantastic job of this and I think should be something to consider when you’re deciding on a school. So many have truly excellent academics, a strong athletic program, and plenty of interesting clubs & extra curriculars. But it’s the life in-between them, harder to define and intangible maybe, which can have an equal if not greater impact.

I just turned my head to look out the window to see MORE SNOW coming down…
