Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):none

Reflection
Strengths: SAT including subject tests, quirky extracurriculars (national history day state comp, first in mythology at states), interview
Weaknesses :weighted GPA, no hooks(not an athlete or minority)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: SAT’s, interesting activities, lots of demonstrated interest including visit, interview, comm. with school with emails, did scholarships aps (didn’t get but showed more interest)
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
first school he is into. applied to 12 schools. His ED school he was deferred(top LAC). still waiting on 11 decisions including Swarthmore, Bowdoin, Pomona, emory and others. at this pt he is loving wash un. and might go even if he does get into his ED school in the RD round.

Congrats to all accepted and good luck to all deferred/rejected at the schools you are attending! Honestly looking at the post last night i didn’t see a rhyme or reason to kids being accepted. I am sure kids getting accepted were all deserving, but saw many deserving teens who got wt listed and rejected with equally great stat, extracurr. and sometimes even better. I think in the end college admission comes down to so many factors and shouldnt define you or make you feel not good enough. So glad S applied to many schools as you can’t count on any school especially without hooks! I would say that Wash Unv. is big on demonstrated interest. sure kids and some posters yesterday said they got in without dem. interest but for the majority without hooks or geographic diversity, you need to show dem. interest to get in. even if you cant visit make sure you have comm with regional rep(not annoying just a couple emails) in addition to info sessions at hotels if they come to your town, and meeting with regional rep if they visit your school and lastly make sure to do the scholarship apps at least one. don’t count on getting these (I think less than 5 percent do) but use it as a way to show more dem. interest in school.

Reflection

Strengths: Diversity/minority status, pretty good/standard test scores I think, Common app essay, good reccomendations
Weaknesses: Not a lot of APs because homeschooling, no interview and no scholarship applications (might have demonstrated lack of interest)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My stats are pretty typical of their students, my common app essay really showcased my passion for learning, and my minority status probably worked to win them over. Also my math? Not sure how many potential engineering majors take multi in high school

General Comments: congratulations everyone. sort of applied to WashU on a whim but I’m excited to check it out now that I’m part of the admitted class :>

Reflection
Strengths: Scores (all 36s in one sitting of ACT – had a 2320 SAT, but didn’t send) and grades (valedictorian in a very competitive school)
Weaknesses: Work experience – we travel a lot in the summer, so couldn’t get a full time job. Didn’t play varsity sports.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
CommonApp - Growing up in my fort; Only one I was really proud of; took something cliche and saw it from a new perspective
Actually turned in another essay, essentially a Why WashU essay to show I did my research and that I genuinely considered the school instead of just applying to apply; Guess it didn’t work :frowning:

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
APUSH Teacher: Heads a few of the clubs I held positions in; known to write generic recs, but told me he would take the time to write one for me. The vibe I got later though was that he wrote me a generic one
AP Bio teacher: 10th grade, but he loved me. I think he wrote well, but never saw
Counselor Rec: Said she only wrote a few lines here and there
Additional Rec: PI from research, he should have written a good one

Interview: Interview was weird. Came in with alot of questions about the engineering program and my interviewer was from Olin so not much in common;
