[li] SAT I (breakdown): 2320 superscore (800 CR, 720 M, 800 W)
[/li]

[li] ACT: Didn’t send
[/li]

[li] SAT II: 750 Bio M, 740 Lit
[/li]

[li] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Don’t know exactly what UW is-- probably around 3.7ish. I know my weighted GPA is 3.91. [As a sidenote: I go to a very rigorous prep school with a well-known rep for grade deflation, so that’s probably why I managed to get in with mediocre grades]
[/li]

[li] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank at all
[/li]

[li] AP (place score in parenthesis): Euro-5, Eng Comp-5, APUSH-5, Bio-4. Will take Lit and Calc BC this year.
[/li]

[li] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[/li]

[li] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc BC, AP Lit, Political Theory Honors, Programming I, Environmental Science (AP not offered), Physics (only class that wasn’t most rigorous available)
[/li]

[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Several national and state honors for my research
[/li]

Subjective:
[li] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Most major thing was science fair/research: I’ve published work, been invited to some pretty cool presentations, etc. Model UN (president, some awards), JSA (debate; president plus other major leadership within organization), SciOly (award last year), Student Senate (equiv. to class president), Horseback riding (competitively), leadership in local charity organization, a couple other small clubs
[/li]

[li] Job/Work Experience: Two unpaid internships; one was in conjunction with my science fair research, the other was more of an architectural/green energy thing
[/li]

[li] Volunteer/Community service: Lots of hours volunteering at a therapeutic horseback riding program for students with special needs, volunteer every summer as a Counselor-in-Training at a local overnight horse camp, volunteered as stream quality monitor for parks district
[/li]

[li] Summer Activities: The internships, counselor-in-training, attended Women in Engineering summer camp
[/li]

[li] Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8/10? 9/10? I felt like it was just decent, but my college counselor thought it was amazing. I wrote about reconciling my more traditionally “girly” interests with my love for science as well as how my family inspired me to pursue Engineering
[/li]

[li] Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Didn’t read them, but I think they were really awesome overall. I’m fortunate enough to go to a small school where I’ve been able to get to know my college counselor really well. She’s kind of amazing, and definitely helped me so much.
[/li]

[li] Teacher Rec #1: 9/10 or 10/10 from junior English teacher. He’s my all-time favorite teacher, and I know that he would have done a great job with it.
[/li]

[li] Teacher Rec #2: 8/10 from junior Precalc teacher. She’s very nice, but doesn’t know me as well.
[/li]

[li] Counselor Rec: 9/10 or 10/10.
[/li]

[li] Additional Rec: Honestly…I’m not 100% sure which ones my counselor ended up submitting through naviance, haha. I had fairly short recs from both of the professors I interned with as well as the person who oversaw the stream monitoring program
[/li]

[li] Interview:[/ul] Interviewed on-campus with a student after a tour last spring. I think it went well.
[/li]

Other[ul]

General Comments:
At this point, I feel like I should say like “Go [mascot]!!” or something but it just occurred to me that I actually don’t know what WashU’s mascot is. I should probably look that up ;)

But in all seriousness, WashU was my dream school, and I couldn’t be happier. I am so, so grateful to be accepted. Congratulations to everyone who made it! :)

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

AP (place score in parenthesis): AP US History (5), AP English Literature (5)
Senior Year Course Load: Core curriculum- AP Calc, AP Physics, Honors english and honors history

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
I’m not going to go into too great of detail, but:

 • National Honor Society
 • Community service leader for various projects
 • Honor court member
 • Started a recycling club at my school
 • Started a program for upper and middle school tutoring at my school.
 • Volunteer at various parks and conservancies in my area (I’m going into environmental science)
 • Cello for 8 years
 • Ambassador to my school and an environmental organization
 • Summer leadership programs

Job/Work Experience: Two summer paid internships after my junior year at art museums and parks in my area.
Volunteer/Community service:(see extracurriculars)
Summer Activities: I’ve participated in leadership and environmental programs over the summer for about four years.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I loved my essay, but I wasn’t sure what colleges would think about it! I wrote my common app about a somewhat unusual hobby of mine and apparently they agreed with me haha.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1:8/10. From my junior year english teacher who I have a fairly close relationship. He told me that it was very good haha.
Teacher Rec #2: 5/10. My second rec was from a teacher I was not very familiar with but that I was stuck with because of the weird way my school does teacher recs. I’m sure it was an acceptable essay but nothing too great.
Counselor Rec:8/10. Very close with my college counselor. He’s the greatest guy!
Additional Rec: 9/10. From a woman I worked for during one of my summer internships who is one of the nicest people I know. I believe that her rec might have gotten me in because I know that WashU loves nice people and i’m sure that her recommendation portrays dmd as being so.

Subjective: I visited the school, had an interview that was more informational than about getting in, spoke with my high school rep while there and again with him at my high school, spent 90 minutes with the track coach discussing my performance and how I may fit in on his team. I wrote thank you notes to all three people that I met and also the second track coach that I just said hi to. I texted the track coach my times during my junior year ( which were much slower than my sophomore year and told him when I was going to Penn Relays in case he was there too) I contacted the track coach when my application was submitted and also went to the recruitment section for athletics and asked to be recruited by filling in all my performance stats
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 3 varsity sports- Volleyball starter, Varsity Basketball, Track (school record holder in multiple events and MVP my freshman and sophomore year)
Job/Work Experience:
Volunteer/Community service: Volunteers at rehabilitation facility once a week

School Type: Public

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection
Strengths: Good grades and great track times- a great science research experience studying cystic fibrosis at UNC last summer with a UNC prof and took a college level anthropology class during my time there and got an A
Weaknesses: track times were not as good last year…
Why you think you were accepted: I showed a great deal of interest and I got the coach interested in having me at the school. (not sure if I will actually run as I was slower last year) My grades were strong and I come from a challenging high school. I think the thank you notes were a plus that helped also.
Where else were you accepted: Got in ED so I didn’t hear from anyone else

General Comments: Loved this school immediately… hope that continues! Even if I don’t run for the track team, I want to get to know the team as the coach was awesome and the alumni runners were so very friendly. I think my experience at UNC-Chapel Hill over the summer may have helped as well since I was able to take a college course and I worked with dissecting lungs and other cystic fibrosis issues. Science research at my school is cutting edge and one of the forerunners in the country that other school emulate so it has a lot of weight as a challenging program. I am sure my thank you notes did not go unnoticed either.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I’d give my essay a solid 8, but people really loved it. I’m not too confident in my writing skills anyway.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: AP Bio teacher wrote it, and she loved me. I did well in her class and got a decent score on the AP. I’d give the rec letter a 8 or a 9.
Teacher Rec #2: AP Eng. Lang teacher wrote it. I didn’t participate as much in her class, but we got really close through my writing. I loved her class and she could tell. The recommendation was at least a 9, maybe a 10.
Counselor Rec: My counselor had a ton of students, but I made sure to make a lasting impression on her. Probably a 7 or an 8.
Additional Rec: I had my APES teacher write it, and coincidentally he’s the sponsor for a club that I’m really involved in at school. 9 or 10, I’m guessing.

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.94/4.0 (weighted was 4.24/4.0)- very strong upward trend (last semester junior year was 4.5 which is around 5th ranked in class), senior grades showed continued improvement even with increased rigor.

Summer Activities: full time swimmer, participated in Wash U’s High School College Access Program (took intro to psychology and got an A- so I think that went well), job/$$.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I can’t really say, but I do believe I had a very prominent voice- I talked about my learning disability and how I decided to eventually stop accepting accomodations and focus on overcoming it.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1:AP Physics teacher (10- she loves me and knows I’m extremely passionate about learning in that class, makes rec’s personal by having you fill out recommendation questionnaire so its unique to you)
Teacher Rec #2:my English II teacher (REPEAT- THIS IS FROM A REGULAR CLASS!- goes to show that having rec’s from teachers in hard classes isn’t the top priority, teachers dont need to speak of how smart you are- that’s what grades and test scores are for)- another great one, talked about a diversity video we made with a bunch of students (mostly URM) and presented it to a teachers conference to raise awareness about discrimination issues faced in school.
Counselor Rec: didn’t read but probably very good- got a postcard from another college saying she had great things to say so yay!
Additional Rec: my high school swim coach- didn’t read but at banquet she said she was “honored to have coach me” so that was nice:)
Interview: Yes- wasn’t horrible but felt kinda short to me, tripping off my words some of the time but I do that a lot anyways haha

Other
State (if domestic applicant): St Louis, MO (native)
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: pretty competitive public school
Ethnicity: White
Gender: male
Income Bracket: ~135,000- applied for and will be receiving need-based financial aid
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): well my mom used to work at Wash U’s med school (for 4 years- 1992-96), and currently works at Barnes Jewish (which is affiliated with Wash U); maybe LGBT? (i know Wash U has a lot of pride alliance members); also did Explore Engineering day there and was featured in two articles on their website about it so I thought that was pretty cool :)

Reflection
Strengths: good math/science act scores, strong recs, did good at the class I took at the campus, obviously committed to engineering since I can’t really do anything else haha, strong GPA w/ upward trend (only 3 B’s in all high school)
Weaknesses: didn’t take the most rigorous classes (no honors english- only took AP this year, and no honors social studies until this year as well), low act reading/english scores, not really any “amazing” EC’s (like research/internships, etc.)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I also wrote a “Why Wash U?” essay in the additional information section of the common app- discussed why wash U was unique to me (not just applying because of the “prestige” although that is a benefit), what I had done previously at the university, and what I would participate in as a student there (not sure about how good this was but I did use specific examples to show that wash u was really unique and not just another “prestigious school”)
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: God’s grace- super thankful for them allowing the chance for me to study at their university :)

General Comments: Can’t wait to study at my dream school next year! This is amazing- couldn’t have asked for anything better! :D

General Comments:
Had Grades and SAT scores superior to their average. Oh well **** 'em. If they want to accept dumb kids that’s their decision. The only reason I applied was because they had no supplemental essay anyways. And, St. Louis is the most dangerous city according to US News, the same company that ranks colleges. Congratz to all the smart kids that got in legitly and good luck to the kids that got in because of race or other stuff. If you got waitlisted, you better stick and move because “waitlist” is basically a euphemism for rejected.

Congrats to those accepted. But I’m sorry, some of these acceptances make no sense compared to some of the people wait listed and rejected.
