Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8-9, I am a pretty strong writer, basically about how I’ve realized how fast time has gone and that I want to live my life with a purpose, but took it from a very unique perspective and worked really hard on it.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 9, English teacher who really liked me, I was close with her.
Teacher Rec #2: 6 or 7, from my math teacher, math is not my strength and I am not the most extroverted person, so I feel like he didn’t know me that well and it was probably pretty generic
Counselor Rec: 7, probably pretty generic
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: went well, but it was my interviewer’s very first time giving an interview. He was really nervous and it was kind of awkward. It felt more like I was interviewing him. Honestly I don’t think it had an impact on my application though.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 7, I found a typo after I sent it and my teacher who proofread it said it was good but not memorable and just ok for me
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 9, this recommendation is from my english teacher and I know she spent a lot of time on it so it’s probably really detailed. She helped me with my application essay and she was probably really positive
Teacher Rec #2: 10, my math teacher wrote this LOR and I know she really likes me, especially since I got a 5 on the AP test, and it was probably glowing
Counselor Rec: 10, my counselor said she put in a lot of effort on this and it was probably glowing
Additional Rec: I requested a letter of rec from my boss but he never sent it and I had to delete the request on common app, idk if this had an negative impact on my application
Interview: I was offered the chance to interview but I didn’t do it because it was far and could only be at a specific date and location

Reflection
Strengths: LORs, URM, rank, ?? I really thought I would be rejected since very few people are admitted from my school,
Weaknesses: test scores, my activities and awards weren’t that impressive
Why you think you were accepted: I showed demonstrated interest on their websites and portal and also applied for merit scholarships and my stats are probably better than most applicants from my school
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted to University of San Diego (safety school) and deferred at Princeton. I applied to 19 schools so I am waiting to hear back from 17 schools :(( :))

**General Comments: **“OMG, OMG, OMG” I got the Langsdorf Scholarship and when they called me a few weeks ago those were literally the first words I said to the dean of the school of Engineering. Probably not the most articulate way to express my excitement but holy crap was I excited. However, after receiving that amazing news, I actually heard back from a few other equally amazing colleges that I might need to take a look at before making my ultimate decision.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t send.
ACT: 33
SAT II: Bio-M (780), Math II (730)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/120
AP (place score in parenthesis): Psychology (5), English Language (5), Calc AB (5), Statistics (4), APUSH (3), APHUG (3), AP Lit (3). (I took Lang, APHUG, and APUSH without having taken the classes because my counselor had extra tests on those days).

Senior Year Course Load: AP Environmental Science, Spanish, AP English Language, AP US Government and Politics, English 47A (Dual Enrollment), English 101 (Dual Enrollment), Biomedical Innovations, Medical Interventions,
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): I guess if this counts? Under my leadership, our ACE Mentor team received an award for having the second-ranked project in the nation.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): So many, this list wouldn’t be complete. Key Club (Div. Sec, Pres, Sec), HOSA (VP, Sec), ACE Mentor (Pres, Sec, Treas), MedTech Academy (Pres, Rep x 2), Summer Tutoring Program (2-time volunteer), MUN (VP, Sec), Ambassadors (Pres), Another Ambassador Club, etc. it goes on and on.
Job/Work Experience: Kaiser Permanente Summer Youth Program (Worked 140 hours alongside physicians and nurses in an emergency room and spent 20 hours participating in health leadership seminars).
Volunteer/Community service: 400+ hours volunteering at summer tutoring program, the local food bank, and various other events as a member of Key Club.
Summer Activities: Spent a lot of time at the school campus helping staff with administrative work and also helped tutor kids/acted as a sort of camp counselor during a summer Freshman bridging program. Also worked in the local hospital, also conducting research on health insurance in the United States and how we could go about reducing healthcare costs by advocating for a single-payer health care system. Presented research to colleagues and supervisors at the end of my internship at the hospital.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Common App Essay: 9.9-10 I honestly don’t know lol. I must have spent forever drafting this essay and wow was it amazing. I discussed how my dad’s addiction to substance abuse had driven me to seek validation and appreciation at school. I then discussed how it drove me to advocate for my principal as she was about to be removed because of a change in our school’s leadership structure.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

AP Calc - 10/10. I waived FERPA, but he let me read it. It brought tears to my eyes it was absolutely amazing.
Honors Chemistry/Medical Interventions - Unknown. Haven’t read it, but I purposely chose this teacher because I struggled in her classes so much and I thought she could speak to my resilience.
Counselor - 10/10. Haven’t read it, but my counselor is the coolest person ever and we’re like best friends so it’s probably pretty amazing.
Principal - 7/10. She and I were amazing friends and I spoke out at a district board meeting to save her job. Her letter was kind of generic, but I think just having it improved the meaning of my common app essay.

Reflection

Strengths: Stood out at a less-than-average public school and am genuinely passionate about education. My essays were wonderful and my letters of rec were on point.
Weaknesses: Test scores could have been a bit better.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I don’t really think that my personality was a match for what WashU was looking for and I’m glad that they made the decision accordingly.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I was accepted to Stanford REA (100000000% hella committed), UC Berkeley Regents, UC Santa Cruz, Cal Poly Pomona, and Cal Poly Slo. Waitlisted at WashU. Rejected from Northwestern.

General Comments: The college admissions process is honestly so random and weird. I think that as long as you’re a qualified applicant, the admissions officers care about making sure you’ll fit in at the institution you wind up attending. I’m absolutely in love with Stanford because it was my hella dream school so this rejection doesn’t mean much to me. If you were rejected and feel a loss in self-confidence for the upcoming ivy-day, don’t. Admissions decisions are random. Just because you weren’t accepted into WashU doesn’t mean that other universities don’t want you or that you weren’t qualified. It means that there were other candidates who would fit into WashU better.

Reflection

Strengths: grades/rigor, recs,
Weaknesses: Scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: a LOT of demonstrated interest

General Comments:

I was probably an average applicant with a sub-par ACT score. What tipped me over could be my high level of demonstrated interest (visited/interviewed, went to local info session, called, emailed throughout the year since around May last year). I worried about my scores hurting my admission but WashU seemed to be very holistic and gave me a chance.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): wrote about how when I was younger I didn’t feel accepted by my black culture or my Asian culture and now I have found a middle way where I embrace both cultures. My English teacher really loved it but i would say it’s a 6,7, or 8
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: my English teacher writes great Rec letters in general
Teacher Rec #2: my AP calculus teacher (I’m not sure because I only used her because I didn’t know who else to ask…)
Counselor Rec: not sure. I’m pretty sure the counselors at my school write generic letters for everyone
Additional Rec:
Interview: no

Other
State (if domestic applicant): Texas
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public school (top 50 in the US and top public school in my city)
Ethnicity: black
Gender: female
Income Bracket: 75-95K
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM - I listed my ethnicity as solely black

Reflection
Strengths: essay topic about being mixed and being from two very different cultures
Weaknesses: sat scores not even in the middle 50
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: many of my friends said it was affirmative action (eyeroll). Tbh tho, many of my more qualified classmates were waitlisted/rejected when my friend (she is black too and is actually ranked even lower than I am) were both accepted. Maybe I wasn’t accepted just because I’m black but I feel like my ethnicity gave me more leeway in the admission process.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected - accepted to UT Austin, Emory, Claremont McKenna, Tulane, Loyola Nola, OU, DePaul, Lewis&clark, USciences. Waitlisted at Pomona. Rejected to none.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

  • Common App: I would honestly say a 7, I talked about my role as a team-player and how they are important to any group, but when I went back and read it it sounded really processed

Teacher Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): can’t read but I can make estimates

  • Teacher 1: Physics teacher - great, I struggled in the class but she and I got along really well and she saw that I was a really devoted hard-worker
  • Teacher 2: Sophomore English and Writing Internship teacher - pretty good I think, she’s always respected me and we get along really well too
  • Counselor: I had my apps done relatively early so she gave me “priority consideration” whatever that means, but considering she had over 80 to write and I was in the office almost weekly, I’m optimistic

School Type: public top 100, class of 168
Ethnicity: Latino
Gender: XY
Income Bracket: ~250k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, lots of demonstrated interest

Reflection
Strengths: I’d like to say my personal qualities is probably taking the wheel on all of my apps, even though my EC’s aren’t spectacular, also there’s the commonality of “team-player good guy” throughout all parts of it, SAT as well
Weaknesses: GPA is low for my school, ECs aren’t spectacular, but I think they might see that I’m taking advantage of everything.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly came as a shock, but I guess I was just a good fit. I’d like to think they appreciate somebody who’s willing to admit they aren’t hot shit instead of building up this whole image. Also I showed a lot of interest.

Where else you are applying or have already applied: accepted at UVM (honors), OSU, DePaul (honors), USC (SoCal), waiting on Georgetown and Columbia (fingers crossed!)

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Congrats to everyone who was accepted! I know a bunch of you juniors are gonna eat this up like candy like I did, but all it does is stress you out. Just take a breath, give it your best shot, and know that it wasn’t meant to be if you don’t get into your dream school. You’ll be successful in ways that you just don’t know yet, and go on to do great things at some other place. Be optimistic, but realistic!

Strengths: Wide variety of extracurriculars and clubs along with many leadership positions, high test scores and GPA, high amounts of service
Weaknesses: No work experience, not too many APs (my school didn’t allow anyone under 11th grade to take APs until recently, so I did what I could)
Why you think you were accepted: Probably because of being well-rounded in both academics and extracurriculars. May also help that I managed to be nationally competitive despite attending a lower-quality, non-competitive school.

I probably won’t go, but I wish the best of those who do!

Advice to future applicants: show interest! Visit! I have friends who were put on the wait list and I think their lack of demonstrated interest could be why. Also, consider ED if and ONLY if it is your definitive first choice and merit scholarships are not a factor in your decision.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 9
I was pretty active in my AP Biology class, so I assume she wrote well-written recommendation.
Teacher Rec #2: 9
My APUSH teacher writes very well and he is known to give outstanding letters of recommendation.
Counselor Rec: 9? I come from a relatively large class size, but I knew my counselor better than most.
Additional Rec: 9 This one was from my HS swim coach
Interview: 10 I interviewed on campus. My interviewer was a student who mostly talked about his experiences, and I had a relatively productive conversation with him about how I could be involved in the school. Coincidentally he had the same major and pre-professional emphasis as I intend to have.

Reflection
Strengths: My grades, AP scores SAT II scores are very high, and I have a myriad of extracurriculars. Many of my activities were related to my intended major which is biology. I am very blessed to have the opportunities and experiences that I have had that not only made me a stronger applicant but also a stronger character and person than I originally was.
Weaknesses: I’m a very stereotypical applicant in that I’m applying for biology with a pre-professional emphasis on medicine. There are many like me in terms of career plans and desires. My SAT score could be stronger in critical reading. My writing score SHOULD be higher since I missed three questions which actually takes 4 raw points away due to the 1/4 rule. If I had missed 2 questions, I would’ve only had 2 raw points taken away. The one question cost me about 40 points on the overall score, but it’s okay.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was accepted to WUSTL because of my generally high stats in terms of GPA and sat 2 scores. WUSTL is highly regarded for its pre-med program, so possibly, I just fit their type. Honestly, college decisions have a degree of luck, so that could have played a role, but I am very happy to have been accepted to such a great university.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Accepted: Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, University of Southern California, UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Michigan-- Ann Arbor, Brandeis, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, Occidental

Waitlisted: University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Rice, Vanderbilt, Claremont McKenna, Case Western

Rejected: Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Pomona, Northwestern
