Wash U Scholarships!

wash u takes the common app form for the application
but you have to submit a seperate teacher rec on their form in each packet that you submit to a scholarship (if that scholarship requires an additional recommendation)
The general academics ones require a recommendation, the Nemerov requires one from an english teacher, and the Ervin requires and outside one, I know some others dont, and some of the others I havent looked at.
I'm planning on applying to 4 or 5 different scholarships to boost my chances.

lgregorio: as i believe BtheB44 is saying, you should submit a separate copy of the teacher rec for each scholarship, even if it is the same rec form and rec letter.

This can be found on the teacher rec form:
Please return your recommendation materials—including this form and your separate letter of recommendation—
in a confidentially sealed envelope to the applicant so he or she can include it in one complete scholarship
packet
.

As you can see where I added the emphasis, each form is intended to be included in only one scholarship packet.

Which scholarships require an essay?

I am applying for Rodriguez, Ervin, and Lein and I can't find any indication that they need an essay on the website. But I feel like me just filling out this sheet can't possibly be enough info.

they definitely all need essays.

Describe a person whom you admire and would like to emulate.
In which of your high school or community activities do you take the greatest pride? Why?
Write an essay of approximately 500 words (about 2 double-spaced pages) on the following topic.
Review the biography of John B. Ervin and the eligibility requirements, and reflect upon your commitment to bringing diverse groups together and/or celebrating the cultures of diverse peoples. Then describe your commitment to leadership in your school and how you would continue that commitment at Washington University if you are selected as an Ervin Scholar. Include specific examples of your dedication to the ideals—including diversity, community service, and/or determination and exceptional achievements in the face of personal challenges—embraced by the Ervin Scholars Program.

Rodriguez - Annika Rodriguez Scholars Program, All Schools

Submit an application for admission.
Submit an Application for Academic Scholarships and Fellowships, checking the box for Rodriguez Scholars Program.
Write a brief answer (150 words or less) to both of the following questions.
List three adjectives to describe yourself, and briefly tell why you chose each adjective.
If you are selected as a Rodriguez Scholar, how do you see yourself contributing to the Washington University community?
Write a short essay on the following topic.
Consider the biography of Annika Rodriguez and the eligibility requirements, and reflect upon your commitment to bringing diverse groups together and/or celebrating the cultures of diverse peoples. How do your community service activities demonstrate your dedication to the ideals embraced by the Rodriguez Scholars Program?
No additional letter of recommendation is required because the Rodriguez Scholars Program Committee relies on the recommendations submitted with your admission application. An additional letter of recommendation with your scholarship application is optional. (My coment based on experience - use optional at your own risk).

awesome! thanks so much ST2!

Let me rephrase my comment above - it should have read "omit the optional rec at your own risk". The more you can differentiate yourself from the other applicants, the better off you are. Make sure your additional rec specifically addresses the aim of the particular scholarship. You can get a feel for the aim of each scholarship by reading the info on the website.

ST2, you seem quite knowledgeable about the scholarships offered at Wash U. I have a few more questions, either for you or for anyone who is applying for/has received scholarships from the university:

First, any ideas as to the accomplishments/qualifications of students who have actually received scholarships?

And secondly, a couple of months ago, I received a travel grant from Wash U to fly out and visit the school. Does this give me any sort of advantage in terms of admission or scholarship evaluation (in other words, is the school actively trying to "recruit" me for whatever reason (probably on the basis of test scores, etc.) or is this something offered to a large majority of applicants who have expressed interest in the school?)?

ST2- You said that many Rodriguez scholarships are given out, but how many is "many"? More than 16?

Dante09 - In the past it has been between 20 to 30 per freshman class.

caffeineaholic - The people receiving merit awards tend to be quite accomplished. They are the cream of the applicants. WashU considers these people to be future campus leaders who will make a difference with their lives. May not always end up that way, but that at least is the intent. To get an idea of what WashU is looking for, read the info on each of the awards and see how you fit the profile.

The fact that you were invited to visit WashU is a plus, but it certainly is no guarantee of receiving an award. Not everyone is invited since these invitations are limited. Your invitation was probably based on fairly incomplete knowledge of your resume. Only once they receive your completed applications, admission & scholarship, will they be in a position to make a decision.

There is a strategy thet can help. The best advice is to read the requirements or profile for each of the awards. Then show WashU why you are a better choice than the other candidates (and there will be a large number) to carry on the tradition of the particular scholarship. WashU is looking for people that have and will make a difference with their lives. If that is you, then get that accross to the people making the decision. Good luck.

Thanks, ST2! My essays and research have pretty much satisfied the stated requirements for the scholarships I'm applying for, (hopefully to the extent you describe), so my fingers are crossed! :)

Bump . . . this thread seems to have fallen asleep! ;)

I was nominated for the danforth and am applying for the Mylonas. 2000 applicants per fellowship? eeeek, I haven't got a chance!

i just want to make sure that everything for each application (except the recommendations) can be completed online?

I'm sending my recs out, but I still need time for the application!

thanks

If you check your application status online there is a link to apply online for the scholarships. You can check it now and even get it started (it let's you save and return later) if you want to make sure.

so how many did you all apply for?
Considering how selective they are I applied for 5,
Danforth, Mylonas, Nemerov, Ervin, and Rodriguez.
The essays were a pain, but hopefully I helped my odds enough that it'll pay off.

I applied for 3 - Nemorov, Lien, and Rodriguez.
Filling out all those applications and writing those essays were definitely a pain, but we'll see if it paid off crosses fingers

Applied for 4: Lien, Nemerov, Entrepreneurial, & Rodriguez. + University Scholars Program. If thats not enough interest idk what is. lol

Applied: Moog, Nemerov, Rodriguez, Summer Program, University Scholars

And the last thing I wanted to hear was that the deadline got pushed back to January 20! ughhh I could've spent more time procrastinating lol...:P
