Wash U vs. Emory

Hello all,

today has been an amazing day for me, i got accepted off both the Emory and WashU waitlists. i hope everyone else has good luck as well.

Now I have to decide

I want to do pre-med and my major right now is biology. So which school has a better pre-med program? But, I don't want a highly competitive environment, i still want to get good grades. I really don't know which one to choose right now.

WashU is pretty much exactly what you desire. Fantastic pre-med program with a RIDICULOUSLY good medical school (close proximity) that is not hyper competitive, i.e. where students DO help each other.

What was your first choice? And where were you planning on attending?

my first choice was johns hopkins but i didn't get in there

now i'm equally split between washu and emory and i need some concrete reasons to choose either one... by 4 tommorrow

I don't know as much about Emory for premed, but the medical school at Wash U is one of the absolute best in the country (I am a 48 year old physician practicing at Mount Sinai Medical Center in NYC and my husband is as well and he does resident and medical student interviewing for Sinai) and if our child were premed there would be NO question in my mind that Wash U is the place to go for premed. On the other hand Emory's program is well respected too so if you have other strong reasons to pick Emory don't worry. If it's only about the premed than WASH U. Good luck to you both are excellent institutions.

Both Emory and WashU have amazing premed programs... though I will say, WashU has a med school that is number 4 in the nation, and many of their premed students end up getting into their med school... which is a pretty amazing feat, if you ask me :) Emory was my first choice for a while, but I ended up turning it down for WashU (I'm premed, too). In terms of wanting an environment that isn't as competitive and that you'll still get good grades in, I'd definitely say you need to choose WashU as well... I've really gotten the impression that if you want to do well, you will at WashU. For instance, they have a tutoring service that is free for students to use but the students tutoring get paid, and the professors seem really available and willing to help. I think WashU sincerely wants their students to succeed, and will not try and "weed you out" of their program, like a lot of schools.

Good luck making your decision... and of course I hope to hear you choose WashU.

Wash U's pre-med program is amongst (if not THE) best in the country. You are really prepared for medical school if you still decide to go that route in 4 years. Medical schools really do realize this, as well. I wouldn't necessarily call it "competitive" in that it is cut-throat, but it is extremly challenging and you'll always be studying every night for a test that is coming up in 3 weeks. It's definitely not easy... but if it's a route you want to pursue, you can do no better.

In terms of all the other qualities that make up colleges... Wash U and Emory are admittedly very similar. Similar student body, campuses, city, opportunities for involvement, programs, etc. If you haven't done so already, visit each one of them, and see which stands out to you more. But, if pre-med is your only factor and you want to get into the best medical schools in the country, Wash U is probably the wiser choice.
