So I'm going to get into both and I really want to go to u Washington in Seattle over u Florida even though I live in Florida . I want to study medicine and I know how good u Washington is on medicine but that's not enough to convince my parents.... What else can I say???

What is the price differential? Is that the sticking point for your parents?

First of all, how do you know you are getting into both schools? Generally it is better for those who plan to go to medical school to minimize the expense for undergraduate education in order to preserve funds for medical school. Why do you feel that the University of Washington is superior to UF for your undergrad preparation for a medical career?

You really need to give us a lot more information in order to get informed opinions.

Med school is ridiculously expensive. You should do your level best to finish your undergrad program for as little money as possible so that you have something left to help pay for med school.

As an OOS student you will NOT get accepted to UW’s med school even if you attend UW as an undergrad. UW’s SOM is very restricted to nearly only instate students.

Attending UW for it’s SOM as an OOS student is a naive choice that will likely backfire - costwise and SOM admittance-wise.

If your parents won’t pay for UW OOS, then it’s a non-issue anyway.

Local legend is that UW is less kind to its own ugs than others when applying to the Med School. Unfortunately they don’t publish many stats.

As someone who has lived in both Washington and Florida, I can understand why you would prefer to go to UW… But Florida just makes more sense.

In terms of educational quality, I don’t think that UW is really superior to UF. Unless there’s some compelling reason that UW is preferable that you haven’t mentioned, it seems foolish to spend money you don’t have to spend for the same level of undergraduate education.

It sounds like this student is wrongly assuming that because UW has a highly ranked med school then it would be a good idea to go there for undergrad.

3.6 GPA unweighted
29 on ACT

If the above are your stats, then this doesn’t bode well for someone who wants to be a strong pre-med student. ACT scores are predictors of MCAT scores. And your GPA isn’t high.

Most pre-med students never end up in med school for several reasons, but mainly because their undergrad grades and/or MCAT are not high enough. it’s silly to spend OOS rates to attend UW when it won’t help you get into UW SOM and your high school stats don’t suggest that you’d be a strong pre-med student anyway.
