Washington University Admissions

Hi everyone,
I’ve been trying to find a college that’s has the ideal size and campus for me, and I think Washington University is now my top choice. My sophomore year GPA was 4.5 (4.0 UW), and for both junior and senior year, I’m taking all AP classes (except for band, which is only honors credit). My main extracurricular focus revolves around music - I play soprano/tenor saxophone and piano - and I am in my school’s Chamber Society, Tri-M Music Honors Society, pep band, an outside-of-school jazz band, and I tutor middle schoolers starting saxophone. I’ve been in All-District and All-State Band, along with the Carolina Band Festival, and I just sent in an audition tape for All-National. I love natural science, and I’m also involved in a variety of activities concerning that, including Science Olympiad, summer science museum program volunteering, a secretary position at a female-oriented STEM school club, an organizer position for the annual Creek Cleanup, peer biology tutoring (demand-based, so not the entire year), and an unpaid research intern position at a Duke anesthesiology lab (summer and possibly next school year). I have a few miscellaneous positions too, including a volunteer position at my school district’s afterschool program, National Spanish Honor Society membership, and being a Model UN delegate (to help me with interpersonal skills). I’m taking the SATs in October and am hoping for a score in the 1500s. My awards include the music ones listed above, a few minor Science Olympiad medals, NSHS, gold medal/top 5 in state on the National Spanish Exam, and possibly my name on a scientific publication for my grant work (but not sure yet). I would love to go to WashU for premed - does it look like I have a chance of getting in (not a URM and my family’s income is >300000)? Other places I’m considering are Johns Hopkins, Brown, Tufts, and Cornell.

We sound very alike! (I am WashU Class of 21  .) No one is a shoe-in for WashU, obviously, but your GPA is great, and you have a clear passion for your outstanding extracurriculars.

My one piece of advice (and you may already be doing this!) is to show lots of interest in WashU. Visit (if possible), interview, go to local meetings, apply for scholarships, email your admissions officer or professors in your major, etc. I found all of the people with whom I spoke to be extremely helpful and happy to answer any and all questions. WashU likes to know that if you are accepted, you will want to attend!

Let me know if you have any questions; I’m happy to help in any way I can!

As long as your SAT/ACT score is high you stand a very good chance. Do talk to your parents about budget for school if you haven’t already. You’d be full pay at WashU unless you get a scholarship and make sure your parents are willing to do that. It sounds like you are in North Carolina so they may not want to pay that premium over UNC-CH which is a great school in itself and will be much cheaper as a resident.
