Washington University Dept. of Music

I would like to hear from students majoring in music in Wash U. Any piano students. What made you choose Wash U. for music. Do you feel you get as much attention as your would at Blair at Vanderbilt, or Ill. Wesleyan? Thanks.

Just don't study music. It's useless. Nice to listen to, but yes, useless.

Lol... wow don't say that.

My sister played piano through college and had a piano teacher at Wash U..

she didn't major in music though...

Well my son has been accepted to several universities specifically for piano performance--including Wash U. So I would like to hear from Wash. U students majoring in music.

My D is a graduate student in the Music dept at Wash U although not in performance. Its a small department, not a School of Music like Vanderbilt.Have you visited? If your child is used to a certain level of facilities,it may not be to their liking. Also, one of their most beloved piano instructors (female, cant remember her name) died recently.I dont know what impact that might have on the performance program.
With all that being said, its a close knit department, very supportive and the U as a whole is a wonderful place.

Did your daughter get her undergraduate degree from Wash U also? If not there, where? Yes we have visited the university. My son spent last summer there and had piano instruction as well.

No,her undergrad was at Arizona State..flute performance and then musicology.
If he's satisfied with the facilities, then great!
I know they havent replaced the piano teacher yet but Im sure they will by the Fall.
D also tells me there are plans afoot to move the music facilities (at least studio, practice and performance space) into another building which is off campus but adjacent (?)..but I dont know a timetable..it involves not building from scratch but renovating.

"Nice to listen to, but yes, useless."

There are so many things that fall into "nice to ____, but yes, useless." that your argument is useless. In my experience, someone who can't appreciate music and its uses isn't a fully mature human being.

anyone know about the string programs/teachers (cello in particular?)
