Iachhi and other parents – congratulations on your students being accepted to a great University! Our student is going to be graduating in about 7 weeks – amazing to think that we were in your shoes just a few short years ago. Overall our experience with Wash U and the education our student has received has been top notch. Per your questions regarding Admitted Student Receptions – the Wash U APAP (Alumni Parents Admission Program) is actively conducting “Admitted Student Receptions” in cities across the nation. In fact, Baltimore’s was today. Here is a link to their website – I encourage you to reach out to them. These events – and the “New Student Receptions” later this summer – are well worth attending (and fun!). https://alumni.wustl.edu/getinvolved/apap/Pages/parentresources.aspx
WashU does well in involving parents to touch base with families of newly admitted parents. APAP is a wonderful resource and all parents should join.
I’m meeting a parent from Redwood City for coffee in a few weeks thanks to APAP.
And I have to admit that I volunteer for more WashU functions since my alma mater does not reach out to me unless they want a donation. The second most expensive college in Silicon Valley should better learn a few things if they want to be nationally ranked. Like engaging parents and alumni.
I just signed up for APAP. Not sure what to expect, I will be a new parent to WashU, my son is ED2 2023. Other elite universities, like WashU, that get a huge number of great applicants did not seem as welcoming (even my alma mater). It seems they get jaded with so many applicants, they are polite but not as responsive and seem to be going through the motions. On the contrary we felt genuinely welcomed at WashU from the beginning of the application process long before he was admitted. During a campus visit my son loved it and all the people he met were great - including random students that he talked to. He felt sincerely wanted - and that means a lot given how brutal the application process has become for all kids given the low acceptance % at the top 30 schools. We feel very lucky.
@lachhi WashU is definitely a welcoming school. My kid had it on his radar since sophomore year of high school-a friend of his in high school who is a current WashU senior recommended it to him. After his first visit he told the parents that WashU was the perfect place for him.
New Wash U Parents – Welcome! As I mentioned above, we have had a fabulous experience and have been welcomed with open arms to Alumni events and other activities in addition to APAP. We really enjoyed helping out on College Fairs. Parents of high school students really enjoy talking to parents of current students. Of course, our enthusiasm for the school is quite genuine – we find it quite easy to have these conversations with parents and potential students based on our experience. Good luck!
