I sense a lot of disappointment and frustration with the admissions office right now. When I was in admissions (10+ years ago), we always told anyone that inquired that April 1st was the date. Of course, that was before portals so we used to send out the packets via mail. And that’s the way you would find out. But now, of course, everything is done electronically so there are challenges that are inherent in getting out the notifications in a fair and non-discriminatory manner. I don’t think WashU will ever give you an official date of release other than April 1st because there are so many factors that could happen that would affect the date of release. The biggest factor is that admissions is literally making decisions on applicants down to the wire. Granted, 98% of the decisions are made. But there is always the last 20 or so that we would agonize over. And when I say agonize, that is actually what we do. We always wanted to create the perfect class - diverse, intelligent, well-rounded, compassionate. And there is so much thought that goes into this. This is why we value students that show high interest in the school - when we offer you admission, we really want you to come because you are really special. That’s not to say that people we deny aren’t special - you really are and you will thrive at a place that is suited better for your strengths. And to any you who have visited, you know how awesome the student body is. But you should also know how awesome our faculty and staff are as well. I’m clearly biased but I hope any of you who are lucky enough to be accepted will attend. The experience is transformative.
Back to the original point, I know how frustrated you all must be but please remember that you are frustrated based on times and dates stated on an anonymous message board. WashU has never given these dates to you. I hope that none of you are foolish enough to rule out WashU based on this. I promise you, your patience will be rewarded.
amen @universitydude
WashU has a big yield problem like Uchicago and that is why many of us are going to get waitlisted. They spend a hell lot on advertising and have no supplements to attract more applicants and lower their acceptance rate and move up rankings. So many who don’t want to go wustl still apply.
universitydude , Thank you for your insight! Wash U is a wonderful school with so much to offer. The waiting is as hard for us as parents as it is for students. Wishing everyone the very best when decions arrive!
@10InvalidUserName01 and @Bullsworth123 and @cashme - while I love your fascinating repartee of “HE TOOK A DIVE! NO HE DIDN’T! YES HE DID! NO HE DIDN’T” - maybe there’s a more appropriate thread than this one for you to continue your thought-provoking debate…
@universitydude , this whole visiting the school to demonstrate interest is unfair. Not everyone is in driving distance. Not everyone can afford to visit. I have taken interest to research, write essays and applied should be enough for demonstrated interest. It’s not like WashU guarantees that certain test scores, GPA and visit will grant the admission. It makes sense to visit if there is a guarantee. Or Wash U should say no visit no seat on their website. That way I dont waste my time applying to school if I cannot visit. This is not just for WashU but any school that insists on visit for demonstrated interest. I have applied to 10 different schools from west coast to east coast. With not knowing where I would get, which ones should I visit?. It is expensive to apply to multiple schools, I have chosen WashU among 100’s of schools should be good enough for demonstrated interest.
I am an Asian student ORM, but i have no complaints with university trying to have a group of people with diverse backgrounds and ethnicity. It does contribute to intellectual development and real life understanding of the world when they step out of the school.
Emory used to insist on school visits. Now they have said they it has no impact on the decision. Visit should be totally for student to know more about the school and see if he would be happy there. It should not be other way around. University should pick the students on the merit of their application. That’s my personal opinion. I may be wrong.
FYI… I have not visited WashU. Being a PreMed focus, WashU is my one of my top choice ( considering finances and other factors are equal). Not because I did not want to. With the school schedule, work, parent schedule and cost, it was not possible. If those were not an issue I would love to visit every school and talk to faculty and students to know more about the school. I sure hope they don’t reject me because I have not visited the school or called faculty or admissions for the information that I can get on website, just to pretend an interest
