Washington University in St. Louis or William and Mary?

These are the two schools I am currently deciding between and I would appreciate any help/advice!! I'm from NH, so either way I will have to travel. I am also undecided but interested in psychology/neuroscience. I received $13,000 from WashU (about $60,000 total) and I'm not sure about WM yet (about $50,000 total). Would anyone be able to give me some input regarding pros/cons, such as location, weather, school spirit, workload, athletics, the general student body, or anything else you might have information on for either of the schools, or why I should pick one over the other?

NH weather will prepare you for St. Louis weather, plus WashU pulls students from all over the country. WM has at least half of students from Virginia. Winter weather in Virginia is better than St. Louis, though, but I guess that is obvious.

WashU students made a list of top 10 happiest in the country. Not bad.

My cousin did his MD residency at WashU and says that his network from WashU has been the best of his career.

Hard to go wrong, but I think you might be happier and fit in better at WashU.

I don’t anything about William and Mary so this isn’t an endorsement of one over the other, but St. Louis is a GREAT place for students. Lots of low cost ways to entertain yourself, a beautiful campus, and some of the nicest dorms in the nation.

<a href=“26 Reasons To Appreciate The Hidden Gem Of St. Louis | HuffPost Impact”>HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost;

Grad of one school, D at another. Both great places. Kids at both places are bright & focused. Workload is intense at both places, but they find time for fun too. Engineering is really top notch at WashU. W&M is going to have a few more Gen Ed requirements–more liberal arts focused.

Wash U is in a great city with fun things to do around campus. Safe campus that is super easy to get to from airport. W&M in small town with nice shops, good food and tons of history with both colonial and southern traditions- and near a beach. Kids at W&M have fierce school pride and do support their sports a little better than WashU.

Going to get a strong VA component at W&M as it is a state school versus WashU which has kids from all over - although IL, FL and NY seem to be heavily represented.

Neither is a suitcase school. Kids stay on campus for the weekend. But most WashU kids really don’t live anywhere near St Louis. WashU dorms are much nicer than many at W&M…that’s where the private school factor comes into play.

Bring from NH you might find it challenging/interesting to be exposed to southern traditions/culture. It certainly can broaden your world view. Although most kids aren’t from the mid-west the students at WashU certainly take on the friendly mid-west collaborative attitude there. Many W&M students come from the highly competitive northern Virginia culture.

If you choose WashU I strongly recommend the Pre-orientation options. Great way to connect with kids with similar interests before orientation starts. We wouldn’t have known about it except a student from our community recommended it.

Both great choices. Good luck!

WashU has that great neuroscience program, but is it worth $40K more than W&M’s. Not for my family. It’s undergrad. W&M is a fine school and its u/gs are much like WashU’s.

I love William and Mary we are big fans and live in Virginia but it is like comparing a cubic zirconia to a diamond that is how much more incredible Washu is yes it is worth it. Absolutely agree W and Mary is an incredible school but see my other post, Washu believes in your child and once there will go overboard to make sure they succeed, my child is thriving and almost monthly we are shocked with the news of another incredible opportunity offered to him. Totally worth it, another kid we know just graduated and was offered a TOP job at Google, no matter what field Washu U works hard to make sure your child is marketable and successful with their future plans, another friends son in International business was just sent to Germany to a top 5 firm all expenses paid, this school is beyond words.
