As Early Decision 2 deadline approaches, it might be nice to start this discussion thread.
Deadline: Jan 1st
WashU is amazing. Good luck to u all!
Has anyone heard back for early action?
WashU does not have early action.
Only Early Decision I and II
What are some common extracurricular activities for neuroscience majors at WashU?
Congratulations to all ED 1 applications that got in! Let’s get hype for ED 2!!
When will we know about ED 2 decisions. Is it mid February
The ED2 notification date is Feb 15th - however last year the results came out a couple of days early - the afternoon of Feb 13th.
Thank you!
I have read on another thread that mostly decisions are posted on Thursday. Feb 15, 2020 is a Saturday. Hoping they will be released on 2/13. Last year it was 2/14.
Yes, it was Feb 13th last year (two days early) - at least for several people. But I suppose others may not have looked into the portal for the decision until later. If you are applying, good luck!
Thursdays are good luck!
Wishing Happy Holidays to everyone!
Just got emailed about an alumni interview!
@roxinthebox Good luck on the interview! My son found that the WashU alumni interview was more relaxed than others he had for other universities. It was at a coffee shop near our home, the alumni had graduated only about 7 years earlier so she was closer to the college experience. Although, her major was different from his intended major, he had a good conversation with her and then afterwards wrote her a nice thank you note/email commenting on their conversation as well as reiterating why WashU was his top choice.
I don’t think the alumni interviews carry a lot of weight unless the interviewer reports back that the candidate is not a good fit. The interview is good way to learn more about WashU and to show your interest by having done some homework in advance of the interview. WashU values demonstrated interest by the candidate.
Again, good luck!
Thank you so much for the advice! This is my first interview, so I’m glad to hear that it will be pretty relaxed. I’m also meeting close to my house, and the interviewer graduated only a few years ago. I can’t wait to learn more about WashU! I’ve been interested in the school for years, so I’m hoping for the best!
If anyone is applying ED2 and wants some idea of their chances, go ahead and PM me. I have quite a bit of experience as a WashU parent (Class of 2021 kid) and my crystal ball/gut feeling is pretty much correct in most cases…
What are admissions rate for ED2 vs. ED1? Why does ED2 seem significantly lower?
@yogik i attended their info session in july & they said that they accepted maybe 40% of their incoming class through ed1 and 60% early overall. i’m not sure abt the exact stats bc i forgot to write them down but it definitely was an insane number that they said they would adjust for this yr. according to last yr’s ed thread, there was a 40% acceptance rate for ed1 & a 20% acceptance rate for ed2. in general, ed2 acceptance rates are lower, probably because the pool is more competitive? idk.
WashU only last year implemented ED2 so it is hard to predict the % of students admitted in ED1, ED2, RD but it is likely around ~40% ED1; ~15%+ ED2; and ~45% RD. Note, those are NOT acceptance rates. They are merely the relative sizes of each category - and that could be driven by many factors including managing the yield (for ED1 and ED2 the yield is effective 100% for RD the yield is lower).
The acceptance rate depends on how many students apply in each category vs how many were accepted in each category. Since ED2 was implemented only last year WashU hasn’t released details of acceptance rates by category. So we do not know the acceptance rates for each category.
The total overall (ie blended) acceptance rate is only 14%. However the acceptance rate was higher than 14% for ED1+2 and somewhat lower than 14% for RD. In other words, although only 15% of the class might be ED2, the acceptance rate could have been relative high for those that applied ED2.
Another factor that can affect the outcome of an individual applicant is the relative strength of the applicant pools in the various categories - said differently even though the acceptance rate of ED2 candidates might be relatively high, it could be that ED2 applicants are on average “stronger” and the candidates that are not at the top would in ED2 might not be as successful in that round vs ED1 or RD - but that is conjecture.
In the end do not drive yourself crazy trying too hard to second guess the details of process. If WashU is a priority for you then ED1 & ED2 can be good options but regardless put thought and effort into the application no matter if it you are applying ED1, ED2, or RD. Good Luck to everyone that is applying!
