WashU vs. Duke

I plan to major in neuroscience or PNP at washu (I was accepted to pnp). i was also accepted to neuroscience at duke. i'm completely confused. i live in the chicago area so washu is closer. im also planning pre-med. finances are about the same either way. any advice would be appreciated :)

Firstly, have you visited them? If not, that might be a good way to determine which you like more. Otherwise, what are you looking for? Duke has quite a large sports culture, while WashU does not. WashU is more midwesterny, while Duke is more southern/east coast. All depends what you’re looking for.

i’m more into music than sports lol. and im not sure what you mean by the difference between southern/midwestern. im from the midwest so i guess thats what im used to? and ive visited washu but not duke. im gonna try to make it out there very soon.

Well, everyone always says the thing that strikes them about WashU is the friendliness, I guess that’s kinda where is was going with the Midwest thing. Not that the people at duke aren’t friendly, but it’s a different, slightly more conserved culture.
As I am not musical myself, all I know is that WashU has some of the best a capella you’ll find. My roommate is also in a mariachi band, but that is the extent of my knowledge.

Duke is more preppy.

WashU is very well known for premed and it is very easy to do research at the med school nearby! Also washu was recently voted as #1 for quality of food ([America's Top Universities for Food Lovers Slideshow | The Daily Meal](<a href=“Daily Meal | Cooking Tips, Restaurants, Food Reviews, Recipes”>America's Top Universities for Food Lovers Slideshow)) and the dorms are GORGEOUS

Both are great schools! Either way you’ll be OK

Older son was WashU class of '11 (chose it over Northwestern by a “nose”…younger son is about to choose Northwestern over WashU by a “nose”, class of '16). Our son and we, as parents, loved WashU. A very nurturing, friendly environment for students…campus life is very much a “bubble”…brand-wise, no doubt that Duke has better “brand-awareness” than WashU…we haven’t been able to figure out why, after many, many years of being an elite university, that WashU’s brand-recognition is not equal to its peer schools. In our visits to Duke, you can definitely feel a southern vibe to it, even if its defenders will say it’s a national university that attracts students from everywhere…so, there was a more “preppy” feel to it than WashU (which attracts a lot of metro-New Yorkers). Of course, academically, you can’t go wrong either way…so, if you have time (the clock is ticking!), you should really go visit both. Also, no contest on ResLife, WashU does that, in our opinion, the best of everyone…dorms are beautiful, food (for college) is excellent. We hate Duke’s East Campus (daily 7-8 minute bus ride back and forth to main campus for all freshman), but that’s us! Our younger son is choosing Northwestern because he feels the “fit” is a little more him than it was for his older brother, but we were completely neutral…so, back to the discussion, like we said, if you can visit, hurry!

One more thing, though, if sports on campus is part of your factors…then, there’s no contest…there’s very few things like going to a Duke basketball game at Cameron…although, even if I was in school, I’d hate to do the camping thing at K-ville! So, school spirit…Duke is Duke…WashU has excellent D-3 sports programs, but you can’t discuss the two schools (in this regard) in the same breath…
