washu vs. duke

I've been admitted to both WashU and Duke. I plan on majoring in neuroscience. i'm really confused on where to go. does anyone have pros or cons on each? i plan on going on to medical school.

From what I’ve heard, Duke is notably better for pre-med. I’ve heard WashU has the competitive “weed-out” mentality. And Duke is a better school in general so even in that regard it’s a plus. Note, if finances are an issue, I think that should trump the difference in academic rep.

finances will be about the same at both. and i thought washu was known for it’s strength in premed?
also, how comparable are their programs in neuroscience. I know duke’s is relatively new. thats what i plan to major in.

I’ve never really seen any merit to “strong at pre-med.” Duke has a tremendous number of resources available to undergrads and in no way would be inferior to WashU in any area relating to medical school placement. Personally I would pick Duke, but if you prefer the campus environment at WashU then I don’t think its a major sacrifice to choose the school.

would anyone like to comment on the difference in neuroscience programs at the two?

As a correction, neuroscience isn’t really new at Duke. It’s just that it was only recently made a freestanding major. Duke has always offered a lot of neuroscience courses, and undergrads were able to study neuroscience as a concentration within the biology or psychology major or as a certificate.

You will get a comparable education at both. I think you should think about other intangibles (student life, location etc) Personally, I would opt for Duke.
