I am deciding between WashU and UCLA and am seriously stuck! I know that WashU is ranked better and I would probably receive better attention and have smaller class sizes. I also would be able to join the swim team there. However, I am worried that it is too “cookie cutter.” I consider myself to be a little different and artsy, and not looking for a corporate job after college, and feel ready to meet more diverse people and am afraid I will lack this at WashU. UCLA is not as prestigious as WashU but would offer me the diversity and location I am looking for. Also, I am worried that it is too big of a school. What is your opinion? Thanks so much!
Net price at each? How much does cost matter? Intended major(s)?
In terms of diversity, UCLA has mostly students from California, while WUStL students are presumably less concentrated in particular states. UCLA has a much higher representation from the lower half of the family income range (Pell grant recipients), with 35% versus 7% at WUStL, according to http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/economic-diversity-among-top-ranked-schools . WUStL students are about 60% white, while UCLA’s students are about 32% white.
Class sizes can be looked up at each school’s on-line schedules.
Cost is not a priority for me. In terms of intended major, I am very divided; I am interested in Political Science/Diplomacy but also Industrial Design (I know! so opposite!).
