UCLA vs. WashU

I'm currently stuck between these two schools, which are pretty much on opposite ends of the spectrum. Where would a gay male from NY be accepted? Also I'm concerned about the UC system as a whole, and wonder if budget cuts would drastically effect my education.

UCLA FTW!
I live in the LA area, and know a lot of people who go to UCLA, and it’s pretty much amazing.
My cousin goes to WashU-Seattle and has a super hard time getting classes and she’s in the honors program…
What’s your major? That really affects how the budget will affect you. If you’re in a super impacted major, then it will be bad. I know that nursing is so impacted that they didn’t even accept new applicants to their program this year. UCLA, given the area, more opportunities to make contacts, and the weather is amazing. Plus, the majority of people in LA or pretty open minded.

Many thanks, I should have clarified it was WashU in St. Louis. My major would be psychology.

In general, WashU is a much harder school to get into than UCLA. WashU is also private while UCLA is public, so they look for different things: top private schools admit people for having not only good grades and test scores but also high level EC’s, while public schools are primarily concerned with grades and scores.

Assuming you can get into both schools, they have very different personalities. As readytolearn noted earlier, UCLA has a lot of open minded people (because of its location) and will have a pretty diverse student body since it’s public. However, WashU, while diverse, mostly attracts people from Illinois and Texas.

ready to learn just doesn’t realize that WashU is WUSTL. The one in Washington is called UDub or UW

WUSTL does attract many students from Illinois and Texas, but it also has significant national drawing power and is one of the most geographically diverse campuses in the country. Students come from all 50 states and over 110 different countries. Nearly 65 percent of students come from more than 500 miles away, with a significant percentage coming from both the East and West coasts.

Also, I’m fairly certain a gay male from New York would fit in just fine at WUSTL. There is a large population of NYers and the school has a very welcoming atmosphere.
