WashU(waitlist) vs. UCLA

Hi guys, I may need some suggestions on two schools: WashU(St. Louis) and UCLA. Ok technically I only have UCLA, WashU is a waitlist. But I am considering whether to write a LOCI which I heard is crucial for WashU, or not(Which means UCLA will be my place).

Basic info:

  1. Asian International, majoring history;
  2. No financial aid for both schools, net price is approx. WashU over $50,000 vs. UCLA $43,000;
  3. No scholarships, no special concerns, but do concern about St. Louis’ safety…?
  4. Would like to apply to JD, but could change.

Don’t know if I should hit for the chance to get off the waitlist. Thank you guys all!

Hmm … why do you prefer WashU over UCLA?

It’s quite simple - you need to deposit at UCLA because WL won’t come til sometime in May - July.

So your answer is made.

Financially and emotionally - you are done.

Now, if you’re willing to blow a deposit, you can afford it, and you truly want WUSTL (and I understand why), then have the letter written.

But emotionally, keep yourself separated. A WL, as you pointed out, is a rejection, a hedge to help the school. This year WLs are bigger than ever because schools are unsure of yield due to test optional and getting more apps than ever - hence the WLs are bigger than ever.

If the WL comes through, then worry.

So the fact you are considering the WL tells me you’d prefer WUSTL.

So deposit at UCLA, sign the form to go on the WL at WUSTL (that’s all you need to do), and forget about it. Move on that UCLA is your choice - and what a great choice it is.

If WUSTL comes through, then celebrate. If not, you’ll already be in the UCLA mindset you won’t care.

Either way, you need to deposit!!

Safety is not a concern for the part of town where Wash U is located. Great school where they build a close knit community.

Thank you a lot. I have already submitted the deposit, just haven’t made up my mind yet.

Both are great schools, I won’t be sad if I’ll attend UCLA. But I do think UCLA has more students and perhaps a closer and smaller community is better(both socially and academically).

Ok thanks! That’s a relief

WUSTL is right net to a big park. The campus itself is enclosed - there’s a path to the dorm area. It’s just gorgeous - but it’s contained, small.

Your decision has been made for you. UCLA.

Your question is - should you push hard on the WL. If you are unsure, then do it - so you don’t regret later.

Just ensure, emotionally, as you stated above - you’re good with UCLA because the odds of getting off a wait list are not great. My son was WL at WUSTL two years ago - because getting in there RD is brutal (not so hard ED but I would not let him). He did not get off the WL and is now at Alabama.

You really needn’t worry unless you get off the WL. btw- how do you know WUSTL is over $50K. It’s more like $80K minus aid which you are not yet aware of.
