Watch over your children and keep them close

5 of Lindsey's close friends and fellow graduates were killed last night in a horrific car crash, less than one week after graduation. The kids started finding out over IM and text early this morning. All of the kids have gathered at the HS early this morning and the school is going all out to provide a level of support to the kids to help them through what is going to be a very tough time. I can't begin to imagine the anguish of the parents. Many of these girls we have know since Kindergarten.

Watch your kids, know where they are and who they are with and that they are in safe situations.

Oh, my goodness! That is just awful, Ray111. Please know that Lindsey and her friend's families will be in my prayers today. I lost my brother 3 years ago to a fatal traffic accident. I remember the sudden, mind-numbing moment of hearing the news. And for such young lives with so much ahead ... it is a tragedy for your community.

Zebes

That is very sad to hear such a tragedy. I am so sorry for the friends and family. Reality is that when you put a group of kids in a car they sometimes show off or become distracted and a terrible accident like this can happen. Another factor is that many kids drink alcohol or take drugs and are not thinking that anything can happen to them or others if they get behind the wheel while impaired. Some accidents are just due to lack of experience or distractions like a cell phone. It does remind us to tell your family you love them often because tomorrow is not promised.

I don't know the circumstance of this accident but I hope I can reinforce the message that you can kill yourself or others if you get behind the wheel while impaired. Plan ahead for a safe ride/walk home from the clubs or parties before your judgment is impaired and tragedy happens.

Ray111. I am so, so sorry. Thank you for the reminder of what really matters. I will hug my kids today because I am lucky enough to do that. Strength to you and your community as you reel from this horrible news and gather to embrace each other.

A few details have emerged as there were several witnesses. They passed a car about 10:00 in a legal passing zone. For a reason that perhaps will not be known after going back into the lane after passing, they swerved back into the opposite lane in the path of a tractor trailer. I will stop here. Other classmates were in another car directly behind them and saw everything.

I just went to the school, the outpouring is at a level not seen before. Hundreds if not thousands of students, teachers, parents, and officials have gathered from everywhere. Food and drink is being dropped off by everyone. The kids seem to be finding comfort by being together, it really is a statement about what a giving/caring community and nation we are.

Thanks for all your kind words.

Ray

Ray111. Didn't realize where you were located in my earlier post. Just read the news. H and I are both FHS grads and F was our hometown. This town is everyones dream of the perfect place to raise your kids. Darn. It is just so sad.

^Sax small world, we are only back in Fairport for the summer as Ft Myers is now our official home. Lindsey was just finishing up with her brother up there. We are back for the summer now. Both of my son's also graduated from FHS.

Being a FHS grad you are spot on about the community, many are revisiting the events of the early 80's when 4 other classmates lost their lives on Mosley Road. You know that the community and kids are really good kids from excellent families. It is an excellent place to raise your kids, I think that is what adds to the difficulty in the kids and parents dealing with this.

Once a Raider always a Raider

Terrible news, Ray.

Our prayers go out for the families. Can't imagine how awful that would be to endure as a parent.

I just saw an article on CNN.com about the accident. Makes me cry to see such wonderful, talented young ladies lost in an instant just as their adult life was about to begin.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/06/28/teens.crash.ap/index.html

Cybermom, the story was picked up across the nation by all the major outlets. They were all very talented young ladies and the cheer squad had won the national championship in Florida earlier this year. There are many tears being shed for the girls. Sunday and Monday will be very tough days for all the kids and the parents as they say goodbye, two of the girls will have calling hours at the HS so far on Sunday as the logistics and masses of people involved just make it such that you couldn't do it anywhere else.

Leave it to the media, in the absence of any facts and data the local paper today ran a story speculating that the girls in the back seat may have survived if not for the fire. They also chose to comment on the crash record of the Blazer. I just find it hard to understand how the media thinks! Let the families grieve none of this really matters right now.

I can't get these families and girls out of my mind. It's not only the parents unimaginable grief but the lose of the future lives of the girls that is so difficult.

Hoping your daughter is doing okay.

Time to quit reading the paper, Ray111, the media are true vultures.

Sax it's good that they won't be forgotten. Today will be a tough day, we are going to see Katie first and then the other 4 girls who are at the high school after that. We are close to 3 of the families. The students have done an amazing job decorating the the hill as you will well remember from you FHS days as a remembrance to all the girls. We have gone over a couple of times as we know so many of the kids and just sat with them and let them talk. A number of them have just camped there and have been there for the entire time.

Many of the local business around have sent over many things, food and drinks to make the GYM as comfortable as can it can be considering the situation today for the community and the families. All of the first responders are coming to share in everyone's grief.

For those of you that followed along with the story the police team today had a final news conference. Here is a link to an article and you can listen to the press conference through this link
