Watching your young musician grow

It is fascinating to think that two years ago we were doing auditions and nervously waiting to hear from schools for our son. Even after our son got accepted you could hear his insecurities and fears about pursuing music. He was not at all confident or secure in his playing. He often spoke about musicians a few years older with reverence for how good they were and told me he only hoped that someday he would be as good.

But during a recent lunch with our son I saw a whole new side of him emerge. He was sounding less like an insecure HS student who was in total awe of those ahead of him and more like somebody who is working incredibly hard on his own sound and artistry as a musician. Sure he still has musicians he worships but he no longer says, "Oh I want to be as good as he is someday." It is more, "This is what I am working on and where I want to go." I find that so exciting as a parent.
