Your student visa lets you work on-campus jobs for up to 20 hours/week during the school year. Expect to earn less than $10/hour. After your first year, you may also take limited off-campus positions (up to a total of 12 months) as long as they are relevant to your major. You need to get a work permit before you can take an off-campus job. While your income might be higher when you work full-time during the summer, also keep in mind that your “out-of-pocket” living expenses will be higher too.

Realistically, international students can earn enough to cover expenses beyond tuition, room and board (travel, health insurance, personal expenses) - but you’ll need another source of funding for tuition, room and board.

The only significant source of US-based scholarships for international students are scholarships awarded directly by colleges at the time of admission; mostly by private universities, actually. Expensive private universities can end up being cheaper than publics that way.
