So is anyone preparing for Saturday in any particular way?

So did anyone get an email yet?

^ Yes, got one this morning. Made it into the round of 30. Did you? Anyone else?

good luck people!

Now that the interviews are done, any idea when they announce the results? Is it late March-early April or is it earlier than that?

Anyone heard back yet? The waiting is driving me crazy!

accepted! I got a call from Nancy Galster on Monday

^Congratulations!

me too I got a call from Nancy too

…could those accepted please post their stats? I’d be very helpful.

Hi. First of all congrats to those who made it into the Medstart program! Also, thank you. This topic has been very helpful for me. I am a high school senior and applying for the medstart program. I am very nervous though. I have a good GPA (3.98) but the highest I got on my ACT was a 27. Will I still have any chance of getting in? I know how cometitive the program is and I feel like this will be a major flaw in my app. My scores in math and science were high(28 and 30) but my composite is still pretty low. I have taken the test 4 times, and gotten 26’s and 27’s everytime.
For the rest of the app I feel I am pretty well suited. I participate in many EC. I’m student council president, NHS sectretary and captain of two varsity sports. I volunteer at an animal shelter in my free time. I am also a member of SADD and am a team manager for the varsity volleyball team.
I’m still working on my health care section. I have applied to 8 different hospitals in my area and am waiting on a reply. As of right now, I have worked at my school blood drive, worked a developmental screening seminar at my towns elementary school and have done independent reseach dealing with Genetics with one of my high school teachers.
If any of you could give me any pointers or tips I would greatly appreciate it. Getting into this program would be a blessing for me and I feel very strongly about what I want to study. I have a friend with Cystic Fibrosis and a cousin with MS, I am doing this all for them. I want to be able to help people like my friend Sam and little cousin Katie. Medstart would be the perfeect start to my goal. If any of you could take the time to help me out, i would be more than happy. You can reply or email me at G.G.Spitzley@gmail.com.
Thanks again

Hey Gillian. Here are the requirements:

This program really is competitive, and it’s due by January 15th, so it’s better to start thinking about what makes YOU stand out from other applicants now instead of later.
Yes, you may think that “Oh gosh, WSU is going to accept a person with a 36 over me.” but this may not be the case. Your essays, letters of recommendation, and experiences make you different from other students. The key thing to remember is how you articulate your experiences and passion for the program.

If you get past that point, they’ll call you in for an interview. If you get an interview, you want to practice (and I really do mean practice) beforehand so you won’t leave a bad impression.

Are your weak sections on the ACT reading and writing? If so, you could study one more time and try to take it again (If time permits). I would suggest sticking with what you’re doing right now (The ECs), and if you don’t get a job or get to volunteer at a hospital, keep trying! Your persistence will show them that you’re really interested in the field. They don’t want to accept people who easily give up.

Best of luck!

Thank you!
A lot of good advice. I am going to try taking the test once more (5th times a charm, right?)
I have to talk to my counselor and see if my scores will be sent in time for the January 15th deadline. Hopefully! I don’t know what it is, the ACT has just been a struggle for me (compared to my usual test scores).
and if I do get selected for an interview I will make sure to practice. Luckily, I’m a pretty good public speaker, but practice will give me a leg up for sure.
I hope I can get into the hospitals volunteer program. If not, I have a teacher who said she can get me a position at an old folks home, which is a lot better than nothing.
Thanks again!

Wow Gillian2011, it’s really funny that we both are kind of in the same place. I have a 3.99 GPA with a 28 on the ACT. I am also applying to MedStart but I don’t know my chances. I mean I have leadership and extracurriculars along with volunteering but that only takes me so far compared to the superstar stats of others. At the very least, I hope I can get an interview. For the ACT, I am also looking to take it one more time (my fourth) before it is too late. December is the next available test date so I am aiming it for then. Hopefully the scores will be processed by Wayne no later than January 15. Best of luck to you!

I actually just got back from my ACT! I’m hoping I did better. If you take the December test I would look into getting your results “rushed” I talked to my counselor and she said that if you pay extra you can get your results in two weeks, so I’d look into that.
I really hope they do look at more than just the ACT and GPA. I’m worried about Medstart already, because I know it is SUPER competitive, and I want it really bad.
I’m sure you know how I feel
Good luck!

Hope you did well on your test! It’s funny that Wayne still hasn’t processed my September 2010 ACT scores which I repeatedly call them about. I am going to do whatever it takes to send my scores as fast as possible.

I know what you mean. I have been constantly dreaming about being part of MedStart. It is such a great program with great people. In fact, I literally think about MedStart on a daily basis because I want it so badly. I hope I can get an interview to show my true interest in medicine rather than just judging me from test scores and GPA.

Did you prep well for your recent ACT test? I do really well on English and Math but kind of bad on reading and science. Any tips will be greatly appreciated. I was just wondering because I have to start preparing for the December test. Are you also looking at any other programs? Are you a Michigan resident? Good luck to you too.

Thanks! I did prep for my ACT. I used a prep book that I got from the library, I’m not sure if I actually learned anything from it, but I took some practice tests and it boosted my confidence a little. I would recommend looking at one, especially for the areas you struggle with, which are also science and reading for me. It only took Wayne a couple weeks to process my scores but I had them sent twice
Medstart would be a dream come true. Not only is it a full ride scholarship, but a chance to be part of the medical community at Wayne. I literally want it more than anything right now. Do you volunteer at any hospitals or doctors offices? I’m actually starting next week at a clinic where I can work hands on with patients and families. I guess one of the doctors who works there went to Wayne State, so he knows a lot about the program.
I do live in Michigan, near Lansing. I haven’t really looked into a lot of other programs, I’ve been pretty wrapped up in all the Medstart stuff. Have you been to any of the Medstart meetings at Wayne? I really want to go to one, but I don’t know if I should drive two hours

Well thanks for the tips. I don’t know why Wayne is being so slow but I guess it will eventually get done. What do you mean you had the scores sent twice? Like twice for the same scores or two different test scores. Yea MedStart is an awesome program to be a part of especially with the scholarship and relief of guaranteed seat in their Med school. Yea I did volunteer at a hospital near my house for 115 hours this past summer. I am trying get more but school gets in the way of good opportunities. I should be starting back up next week actually and I am planning on doing as much as I can until application deadline date comes around. I am also trying to do some job shadowing but that just seems too hard since no hospitals in my area has a program for it. No, I have not been to any of the MedStart meeting at Wayne yet but I did talk the head coordinator about the program over the phone. It was really intimidating for me to be speaking with the person who could potentially make my dreams true lol. I asked her all the questions I had and I am even more nervous now after that talk. She was super nice and I enjoyed the talk because she said that I had good questions lol. To be honest, I don’t really see the point of going for a meeting because they all tell you the same thing. Things like it’s a very competitive program and it only takes 15 students. We already know all that. Oh yea, I only live like an hour away.

I sent the same scores twice. They sent me a letter saying that they had not recieved my scores yet so I sent them again and they had them proccessed within two weeks.
You have a good amount of volunteer hours under your belt! That will help, I’m sure.
It’s probably a good thing that you talked to the director on the phone, it will make you less nervous if you get an interview, which I’m hoping you will. You have a better chance than I do! The number of volunteer hours you have are impressive. I hope they pay off!
I wish I knew what I wanted to do with my life sooner. I actually never imagined myself wanting to go to med school. I used to be scared of needles and I would faint at the sight of blood. I’ve grown out of it for the most part, thank god. But I’m willing to face any fears I have left. Working in the medical field will be very rewarding. What exactly do you want to study? I want to work with genetics, possibly becoming a medical geneticist. Hopefully Medstart can help me with that.

Wow…It seems like you have more confidence in me than I do in myself for this program. I might just send my scores twice just to make clear everything up. Yea, I also wish that I had made up my mind back during freshmen year so I could have really gathered up the experience and everything else this program asks for.
Yea, talking on the phone was kind of nerve-wrecking, but I am good at talking with people so if I could manage to pull of an interview, I could do well. Genetics, huh? Sounds really cool. I am also looking into University of Michigan for biomedical engineering because that also grants me a path to the medical field if this whole MedStart does not work out…Most likely it won’t lol but I am praying it does. Good luck to you too!
