If I were an employer, I’d think the U of M school of anything looks better than Wayne State. I’m guessing you’re from MI?

Yeah it does. And it’s more fun of a place.

Yep i’m from MI.

These are the CC’ers that said they are going:
batpad
medschools2011
ViggyRam
bluecomptr
lnguye02’s son
alpana
keyboardist

Post if you are interviewing and not on the list of CC’ers.

@iamsocool, I go to school in Canada, so saying my high school won’t mean much to you lol

@liv4physicz, I really don’t know what you mean. If you mean U of M medical school (and things like business, etc.), then you are probably right (although residency matching depends on many factors including AOA status, USMLE board scores…mainly Step 1 though…, grades, recs, research, etc and the school makes a diff. but only if you have everything else in order).

But if you mean just undergraduate-wise…as a ‘premed’, it’s not a huge deal. Obviously an applicant with 3.9 and 37 from U of M looks much better than a WSU student with 4.0 and 37, but obviously the 4.0 is easier at WSU than U of M. Also, when it comes to competitive med schools it’s all about standing out with unique ECs on top of stellar grades, etc. So, it really depends. Of course, doing well at U of M makes up for everything and good ECs will take you far. You’d just need to go that extra mile out of Wayne if you’re aiming for U of M med or Northwestern, etc.

I don’t want to sound biased or anything. I’m just trying to provide an informed reply. Of course U of M medical school is one of the best in the country. There is no denying that, but WSUSOM is very good too and when it comes to residency matching, it’s not as if prestige = top residency. It’s just like med school applications all over again, with all the things that need to be done. (see 2 paragraphs above)

I’m no expert, but these are some of the things I’ve taken out of the premed forum on CC.

The WSU program did look pretty good honestly. U of M is a great school, but so is wayne state med. I really liked their summer of service thing.

Though it wasnt really a fit for specifically me, and i did get rejected anyways, good job to all of those who did get in, and dont be down if you didnt! There will be plenty of other opportunities available to you.

The big day is tomorrow! How has everyone prepared/have you? Are you guys nervous, excited, anxious? I think I’m more excited than anything else.

I don’t have school today, so I think that works to my advantage as I’ll be able to prep a little for tomorrow.

to answer referee’s question, WSU is still a big choice for me but UMdbn and UM ann arbor are also schools that im considering. wayne state is not a bad school…we’ll see what happens at scholars day saturday :)

Post your interview experience

calm down children

Interview was great. The two interviewers created a nice, comfortable environment that I was able to thrive off of.

How did everyone else find the interview experience?

It was chill. very relaxed.

Does anyone know if a presidential scholarship (full ride) constitutes room and board at wayne state?

I believe that the Presidential Scholarship only covers tuition. The University Scholarship is the ‘full ride’.

My 'rents are saying the Presidential included the rooms. From what I have heard all medstarts get full rides.

[Irvin D. Reid Honors College - Scholarships](<a href=“Irvin D. Reid Honors College - Wayne State University”>http://www.honors.wayne.edu/scholarships/index.php)

“MedStart is a unique bachelor of science/medical degree program that provides a four-year Presidential Scholarship* and guarantees admission to Wayne State’s School of Medicine for up to 15 selected freshmen per year.” (from [Irvin D. Reid Honors College - MedStart](http://www.honors.wayne.edu/medstart.php))

So, not entirely sure. I also thought that everyone got full rides, but it just says Presidential. A little confusing. (Well, if you’re National Merit, then you get the University scholarship for sure…which is the full ride + more).

thats stupid then.

Anyways, what did you guys think about Wayne, about medstart, the campus, prospective life there? I’m interested to know what other people thought about it.

As viggyram said the presidential only covers tuition. You still need to pay over $8-9,000 for just room and board. Then books and other things come into play. Especially if your out of state.

^I’d say everything else results in 10K. Being OOS v. IS won’t make that much of a difference, unless it forces you to bring a car for which you must pay gas for, more travel expenses, etc. If you are of National Merit status, you will receive a full ride (University scholarship) from Wayne though, so you don’t have a thing to worry about paying for. (Wayne will even give you a choice of laptop!)

The 10/10/10 MCAT rule just makes this program useless…

anyone hear back about top 30?

I haven’t yet. Just waiting until the end of the month, which is when the email said decisions would be debt out,
