Ways to have fun without going away

OK, so dreams don't always come true - most of us wanted to go California, or England, or Alaska or Princeton or whatever for college, but it didn't happen, and we're stuck at our regional state u's.

I have a pretty big urge to explore the world/places...which I bet is pretty common for an 18 yr old. What are some ways you all have satisfied your urge to go new places/see new things even though your dreams didn't work out exactly as planned?

Study Abroad, or if you want to stay in the U.S., check out the National Student Exchange--similar to study abroad, but at a school in the U.S.

Take advantage of the Recreation Dept/Adventure Club at your new school - you would be surprised the places/things they do - lots of fun. Research and take advantage of exchange programs - in/out of the country. Become a volunteer - some/many opportunities out of your area I would think. Take a road trip - doesn't have to be that far away - but explore - be safe tho :) There is much out there in our world to see.

Definitely Study Abroad or a student exchange - even if it's just over winter or summer break.

Or, you could always save up money and take trips when you can. I've been traveling to various places in the US over the past year and half (though a series of circumstances) that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. I'm working up to going out of the country - to Australia! =D

Don't discount day trips or overnight trips to other large cities close to you! I know people who have gone 3 or 4 hours away for a weekend to see concerts and visit friends.

Get a job/internship over the summer in a big city or someplace else that's far away. It should pay for itself.
