Explaining what all of the engineering majors are, starting salaries, industries, employers-by-region, etc. If I see another "CE vs. EE HELP!!!!" thread I'm going to scream. People aren't going to search the forum apparently, maybe if we had a READ THIS FIRST sticky it might eliminate a lot of unnecessary threads around these here parts.

I do think this is a good idea, but there aren’t any mods that really read this forum. If there was, I think they’d update the 2008 US News rankings with the latest one.

There are about 4 new stickies that need to be made. Others that are needed are one about how to search the forums and a general forum etiquette thread including such things as “don’t post threads asking which engineering major is the hardest.”

But you are right, there are no moderators specifically assigned to the engineerig forum and other mods RARELY browse through here. When they do, it is usually only when they are requested to resolve an issue.

The real title of this thread shoul be “We could REALLY use a mod or two for the engineering forum”.

I created a thread in the Community & Forum Issues section of CC. Let’s see what they say.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/community-forum-issues/963129-engineering-forum-moderator.html

Dang you beat me to it.

BTW, I like the format of the stickies that the Graduate School forum has. There’s one or two posts in the beginning of the thread by the moderator that gets edited with new information, so one wouldn’t have to scroll down through the thread to find what s/he needs. That’s something that should be adopted here.

That format is common on most forums. Usually stickies are locked. We are just weird here in the engineering subforum.

Please create a sticky on how to obtain the proper mathematics preparation for science and engineering programs.

Just tell them to STFW.

Enginox, I second tht wholeheartedly. Haha

Engineers

Just link to that in the sticky. It answers basically all of those questions.

Thanks guys. In the absence of a dedicate mod for this forum, I went ahead and removed the outdated sticky. If you have other ideas for threads that we could sticky here, please let me know. We’d like to limit it to no more than two or three. It is also possible to post one sticky that includes links to the most helpful threads in this forum. Thanks!

Gah, careful there noimagination. Some people are a bit… ‘opposed’ to the BLS 'round these parts…

This of course assumes that people will actually read the stickies. I wouldn’t count on it.

Well Sithis, I know you haven’t posted enough to appreciate it yet, but even if the stickies cause one person per month to no ask which engineering major is the hardest/makes the most money, that will still be a success in my book. Heck, one person a semester would be a triumph.

I think whichever sticky addresses that also has to say that any topics such as that face the punishment of derailment onto a topic of any number of desserts, particularly of the frozen variety.

Or, if your handle is a reference to what I think it is, maybe you can order one of your minions to take said poster out.

Haha, yes, but I lurk on this forum enough to cringe every time I see said topics. I suppose even a small change would good. Still, I wouldn’t put it past some of these people to ignore a sticky even if it said ~!!~!!~@#@READ THIS OR DIE@#@~!!~!!~ in bright flashing letters.

Hmm…perhaps the Brotherhood could remedy this, though.

Or we could just ask them to read the stickied threads. I think the best thing that will come out of this is being able to point posters towards the stickied threads instead of answering the same questions over and over again.

I suggest one FAQ thread, one US News Rankings thread, and one thread that the moderator may choose to sticky at his/her discretion to stimulate discussions. The FAQ thread would be arranged by major having links to noteworthy websites and threads. It would also have a general FAQ section for anything broad.

Well I never said we couldn’t be helpful before derailing the thread. I will still stick to my convictions though. aibarr and I have pledged to switch any of those threads onto the topic of frozen desserts, and I have no intention of stopping.

That sounds pretty good. The US News thread ought to have the full graduate and undergraduate rankings. Whether or not it includes specialty rankings (mechanical/electrical/etc) is up for debate since it would take a lot of space.

The FAQ thread ought to have input from all of us who post here a ton. There are a lot of cloned threads that need to be addressed in an FAQ. Each question should probably be in a separate post (made by the moderator) so that when linking back to it to answer any of those clone posts that pop up, we can link directly to the post number.

I don’t think there needs to be a designated discretionary sticky. We get some pretty good discussion going without it.

haha, ok by me!

I agree. It doesn’t matter if the specialty rankings takes up a lot of space. Just put the main undergrad and grad rankings in the first two posts of the thread, and the specialty rankings afterwards. If people aren’t interested, they just won’t scroll down; that’s the beauty of the internet!

I agree. I think we have regular posters who are “experts” in most of the fields here.

Sounds like a good idea. Perhaps an “index” post that lists all of the questions would be helpful for those who are just browsing.

I’m on the fence about it. Good threads can get lost sometimes once it gets past the first page. Can’t think of an example right now, but I’m sure it happens.

We may need some sticky about “what math is used in computer science”.

It may not be up there with “CE vs ME vs EE…Help!”, but it is getting darn close.
