Weak Extracurriculars for BBA Program

I was wondering if I would be okay getting into the business school with weak extracurriculars. I only really was involved in two clubs during my time here, and I didn’t really have a leadership position in either of them. I have a 4.0 GPA however taking 18/19 credit hours from last year.

You apply to the business school for your junior year. Do well at Emory College your first two years and you’ll be fine.

What I meant above is that I assumed you get a total reset when you started earlier this month. If your GPA is good i in the college, you should be fine. If it makes you feel better, contribute to campus life. Best of luck at Emory!!!

@anzhilin : Do not cite credit hours to suggest rigor of schedule. No one knows what those credit hours consisted of. and that is what your 4.0 will be evaluated based upon. I for example, do not trust STEM majors at Emory who claim to have a challenging courseload because of X amount of credit hours. For example, chem 150 has a lab with 2 units now and I know for a fact it does not deserve it based upon workload (as that will not change from previous years where it was really low and only 1 unit. In addition, courses like physics 151-L have significantly more outside work and are integrated in a way that allocates them the equivalent of a single unit). A freshman STEM major taking chem and biology is already at 10 credits, throw in a first year level language, 15, a FWR, 19. Swap out biology 141 with Pols 120 which has a discussion section, still at 18. Emory has kind of rigged things in its rendition of the Carnegie Unit system and has found all types of loopholes to assign extra units that other institutions of a similar caliber on the same system would not in order to smooth the transition from the old 4 hour unit system and to encourage some more instructional innovation (in some cases they achieved that). This is why they will not necessarily be impressed that the 4.0 came from a certain amount of hours. It isn’t hard to accumulate 18/19 hours taking fairly easy or review courses that as a freshman (like the intro. econ. courses are apparently “playtime” to most students even with an HS background).

  • I just do not want you to have an idea or illusion that just the raw credit hours will matter to them when evaluating performance. The college level administrators are probably aware of the things above (which is why they have developed things like: "If you are struggling, don't drop a course unless you think you will score below C" or "please take a serious CWR in ECAS before applying").

Anyway, you need to continue to do well and focus on key BBA core courses and a serious CWR before applying. Also, this ain’t high school. You should not be kind of an octopus superficially committed to tons of things. Choosing a couple and making a serious contribution or developing an impactful hobby in the College is likely easier to sell. Hell, if you had any internships or whatever, you could probably sell that.

The business school is extremely easy to get into. With a 4.0 you should be fine.
