I just got in and really love UW! It seems like such an amazing school. However, I've heard that the weather in washington (I'm from california) is horrible and depressing. I've only been there in the summer so I don't know how it is during the school year. Is this true??

Congratulations on your admission!

As a Californian who attended a college an hour from UW, I can attest that the weather is very different, and the first year was an adjustment. That first year, I was wondering why I felt so “blue” - then realized I hadn’t seen the sun for two months! By the second year, I had learned to love the rain which makes everything so green and fresh up there. And the sunny days… wow… you REALLY appreciate them in a whole new way. Having four seasons is nice.

Some people truly are emotionally bothered by the lack of sun. For those people, a full-spectrum lamp is helpful.

Don’t let the weather warnings scare you. Many of my friends who were from the pacific northwest actually told me they talked up the “bad weather” because they don’t want too many Californians to relocate up there! It’s different, yes, but I think you’ll love it.

As a life long Seattle area resident and as a dad who just witnessed his son’s heartbreak of not being accepted to his dream school (UW), I can offer a Warm welcome to the Pacific NW -

We just spent our spring break at the WA coast and saw Grey Whales splashing and playing in the surf from the shore - Witnessed Many bald eagles watching over us, wild deer eating soft green grasses, saw numerous water falls, etc.

Our son will likely attend and Love Cal Poly SLO for its beautiful region as well but honestly, if you feel the world offers beauty other than sunshine, then you will find it where ever you go.

as far as western Washington, Yep - there is plenty here to appreciate - just don’t stay indoors and hide from it - that is where people get feeling blue…good luck!
