Hi everyone!
So I really want to become a web developer later in life. I’ve been learning different languages (HTML, PHP, Python, etc) for over 5 years and have 2 years of work experience in a company. I freelance now, building occasional web sites for however needs them. I also love web design and photo manipulation. So I was wondering what I should study in college. My counselor advised me to look into colleges that have web development degrees, but I’m not sure if they are worth it or if they are up to date. Does anyone one have any college or major suggestions? Thank you!
Look to programs offered through a college’s school of communications or business school - they’ll be more along what you are looking for than offerings in the computer science departments. Oftentimes there are certification programs rather than degree programs for web development.I work with a number of web developers who do not have a degree or have a degree in something completely unrelated to computers and web development.
One program that I find interesting is the electronic commerce major at U Scranton. The focus is on e-commerce, but you learn to build and maintain web sites, and you learn about the business needs and drivers for website creation.
Elon has a program in their school of communications - covers some development, a lot about how to effectively use the web as a communications tool.

The tools used in front-end development change quickly, be prepared to be continually learning new languages and methodologies - one of the exciting aspects of working in the field!
@InigoMontoya I’m sorry for never replying back to you. To be honest, when I read your comment though back when I saw it and I looked I Scranton I thought I wouldn’t like it, but during my college search I actually ended up applying there. I was accepted with a $16,000 merit-scholarship. As for Elon, I didn’t end up applying because I missed their deadline sadly. Thank you for your comment!
@sonnetfox - you are welcome. Best of luck to you!
