Weed at Notre Dame

When I went on the tour of the school, I got the vibe that most students typically followed the rules put in place by the university, and alcohol excluded, the zero tolerance policy scares students into avoiding drugs. I was simply wondering how prevalent weed is on campus or in South Bend and the neighboring areas. If I was actively seeking it, would it be quite difficult to find?
Thanks

so… bit of a tough question. Yes, it certainly exists on campus and more prevelently off campus. However, I’ll share some horror stories involving people I know.

Compared to alcohol, which in the mens dorms is pretty tolerated (no obsessive drinking games, but behind closed doors you can get away with good sized dorm parties) marijuana is very zero-tolerance. If RA’s suspect that you’re smoking, they’ll search your room, and I know two groups of 4-6 guys who’ve gotten busted for smoking. all of them were dismissed from the university for the rest of the semester, and not allowed to continue to live in their dorm. With dorm life being a huge part of the Notre Dame experience, that can be particularly devastating. Also, considering that the general student population is very anti-marijuana. its unlikely that your roommate will tolerate it being in the room.

That being said, I do know a few people who’ve successfully kept it in their dorms without hassle. But, if you want to compare it to some of my friends at state school who have a “smoke room” (one room where they plug the door, run fans and smoke almost 24/7) you’re not going to have that experience. If you want to attend a school that’s more weed friendly, Notre Dame really isn’t the school for you. If its not something you’re willing to give up, take your strong grades and test scores that got you into ND and apply to more weed friendly schools that you won’t get kicked out of. That may sound harsh, but I shake my head at the 10+ kids I know who’ve partially ruined their college experience by making the decision to smoke at a school thats so unfriendly towards it. They could’ve gone to a variety of comparable schools with more lax regulation, but they thought they’d be able to outsmart their RA’s and rectors. Over a year in the dorms, they eventually made a mistake.

On a brighter note, I have a bunch of friends who smoked in high school who stopped when they came to ND, or only do on breaks. There are definitely friends you can make off campus who’ll make it a safer environment, but I think if you try and smoke in the dorms or keep paraphernalia in the dorms, you’ll be called out and definitely get in trouble.

good luck regardless of where you go, and if you have another other questions feel free to DM me.

We know a bunch of ND students, and IliketoFence’s experience is consistent with what we hear. There is zero tolerance for weed or any drug. We know a kid who got kicked out bc the roommate turned them in for possessing a tiny amount of weed. This is not the place for casual smoking.

S graduated from ND several years ago. He was not a smoker, and he always said Adderall was more common there than weed.

Excuse me for being so direct but … grow up. You have an incredible opportunity to study at the Univeristy of Notre Dame. ND’s rules and the laws in the State of Indiana are such that if you get caught smoking weed, you may be suspended (for a semester) as well as a spend some time in the local jail. You get kicked out, you do not get a refund for the semester. At the current rates, that is $30K thrown away. I do not expect that would be a pleasant conversation with whoever is paying the freight. Or just think about adding a few extra years of student loan repayments for a semester that did not count. From a pro-weed website: Indiana has some of the most draconian marijuana penalties in the country. Possession of even a single joint is punishable by up to a year of incarceration and a fine of up to $5,000. If pot is that important to you, you have a problem. None of that means that there is no pot at ND or in SBN. There is. If you go to ND, and you want weed, you will find it. You just need to hope that you are not found with it.

ND is a pretty conservative crowd from what I’ve heard. If you don’t like that, you can probably get into some schools that are just as good (if not better) and have more fun. It sounds like you would probably fit in better elsewhere.

I second everything that @IliketoFence said.
