Can someone tell me what the drinking scene is at Notre Dame? Obviously it's prevalent on every campus, but I'm wondering if ND is more strict with their drinking policy since it's a Catholic school.

I spent the night in my cousins dorm last year, and from what I understood the priest that’s in charge of the dorm usually doesn’t care as long as all your cans and bottles end up in the garbage and you don’t get too rowdy. And if that does happen he’s just gonna take your stuff away he’s not gonna take you to the dean or anything.

Basically this. I’m a freshman, and a lot of it depends on the rector, with the men’s dorms typically being more relaxed than the women’s dorms. Technically there’s no hard alcohol allowed on campus, but it’s still fairly prevalent: just less so than at other schools. It’s also really easy to get off campus if you want to party, or to find friends who don’t drink if you want to get away from the culture. Do you have any specific questions?

The policy is technically more strict, but it is not very strictly enforced, especially is male dorms. As long as you aren’t too blatant about it (like bringing drinks in the hallway and the rector seeing you). The drinking scene is definitely there if you want it, but avoidable if it is not something you’re interested in. I know people who have been very very very drunk and had conversations with the rector and not gotten in trouble for it. I personally usually go out drinking twice a week and have had no issues with the strictness. But I also have plenty of friends who don’t drink who don’t have trouble finding stuff to do on friday or saturday night.

At the same time, we know some kids who have thought this laxness extended to pot – it does not.

The official policies regarding alcohol can be found on ND’s webpage. As a student, they do make you go through a program to make these policies as transparent as possible. However, as others have said, so long as you are in your dorm with the door closed, not a single person is going to care very much what happens inside. This is especially true in the male dorms, where the rector, ARs, and RAs all expect the students to drink – especially starting on Friday nights. If you’re looking forward to the chance to have a few beers and watch football with the other folks in your dorm, you’ll get that chance. If you’re not too keen on drinking, don’t worry – no one will ever even think to pressure you, and there are tons of things (both in the dorm and around campus) to do that don’t involve alcohol. Drugs, on the other hand, should be avoided at all costs. ND doesn’t play around with that, even something as relatively harmless (says I) as weed. Just don’t risk it. Even if you go off campus to do that kind of stuff and come back looking remotely high, someone may well report you – and that’s all it takes to get the old boot. Trust me.

Completely agree with Horario - drinking is pretty lax, at least in the male dorms. For whatever reason, though, the school is EXTREMELY strict about weed and any other drugs.
