weighted grades?

Hi,

I'm just wondering why so many people here seem to be figuring out how USC weights GPA. From what I've seen, they only look at UW GPA such as here:

<a href="http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/docs/admission/Freshman_Profile_2006.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/docs/admission/Freshman_Profile_2006.pdf</a></p>

so why so much talk about W GPA? Does it really matter?

I know they do look at weighted as well as unweighted GPA's but I am not quite sure of the formula they use.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a standard formula across the country, so you knew going into high school what to shoot for and what was accepted?

USC looks at unweighted GPA and the strength of the classes. Every high school calculates weighted GPA differently so that's why USC does not look at that per se. But by quoting both unweighted and weighted GPA here, it gives us all a general idea of the strength of classes taken.

wait, so which part do you look? Fall applicants, fall admits, or matriculants :| ?? I'm confused

look at admits. that's the gpa you're aiming for.

agh 3.8!! .

3.8 uw?

10 char

yeah 3.8 is the avg uw gpa of fall admits. matriculants are the students who are accepted and decide to go to usc. the reason the avg gpa of matriculants is lower is because the students with really high gpas are accepted to more universities and therefore have more options as far as college goes.
