This sunday I'm attending a local "Tulane comes to you" event. I was just wondering if anybody has tips on what to expect, how to dress, any other advice. It would really be appreciated.

Also, just wondering, if I submitted my early decision app a few days ago-over a month before it's due-can I expect a response any sooner or are they all released simultaneously? My mom just figures if I don't get in it's not worth the money to take a trip. And I'm kind of antsy.

We recently attended a Tulane Comes to You Event. It was a large crowd. It was held in the ballroom of a local hotel. There was time before the event started and after the event to speak with the admissions representative. There were so many people at our event that I doubt an applicant could make an impression on the admissions person but you would get your question(s) answered. It was a large group presentation that included a video. They also had two current students and two alumni come up and speak & answer questions.
As for dress, I would dress as you would if you were attending a college fair - clean & comfortable etc… The two current Tulane students (both guys) who spoke in front of our group were dressed in a casual manner - they were wearing khaki type pants one wore a polo type shirt the other wore a button down shirt - shirts were tucked in.

To echo, dress is casual. Jeans are fine, just don’t look really sloppy or anything like that.

As far as the timing of the decision, it depends on when your app shows complete. In other words, when Tulane shows that they have all your info, including transcripts, recs and test scores. If they have that now, you should hear back within 2-3 weeks. If they don’t get all the info until sometime in November, it might take longer since the volume of apps to review increases as the Nov. 15 deadline approaches.

Agree that dressing smartly but casually is appropriate. If you have a specific question about a program or department or something, consider emailing your rep with the wuestion and then telling them you are looking forward to meeting them at the upcoming event. That way, when you introduce yourself at the event you can remind them who you are.

I just got off the phone with admissions. My older daughter is currently a sophomore, and she had received her decision the first week of October. My younger daughter’s application has been complete for weeks, and I realized that no one had received a decision yet so I called to see if I could get any more information. According to the intern on the phone, the admissions counselors are all on the road and not currently reviewing applications. They are guaranteeing that all early action decisions will be released by December 15th, and probably sooner, but they have changed their policy and are no longer releasing decisions within 2-3 weeks as they had done in the past. Hopefully it won’t be much longer!

Oh wow. Hang in there folks. It makes sense to take the time to review all the applications rather than do the modified rolling admissions, but I must confess, it was great to know by this time 4 yrs ago that DS was accepted to a university and would not be living in our basement :)

I’ve been obsessively checking my application status… multiple times a day. I guess I can stop that now! Did they give any indication as to why they weren’t reviewing right now?

I agree with jym’s statement that there is a compelling logic to reviewing all the apps on the same basis after the deadline. On the other hand, Tulane has been so successful in letting top candidates know early and piquing their interest to the point where they have explored Tulane in depth and, in many cases, eventually choosing Tulane. I kind of hate to see that stop, but given the recent large, extraordinarily qualified classes I can only surmise they feel they can make this change.

I agree with FallenChemist. My son applied early action to Tulane last year without knowing much about it, other than it was a great school. He applied because he received the personal application and he hoped to have a decision which he could bank on. After he was accepted, we visited in February and he knew it was the right school for him. I am thrilled that he is now a very happy freshman.

I called the school today and they informed me that they are, in fact, working on decisions right now. However, about 60% of the admissions officers are traveling. They are scheduled to return towards the end of October. We should expect decisions to begin in early November.
