He already got an answer already anyways. It's a reach as of now
and I cannot really say much until you get your SAT's up.

Hi admissions rep. Can you give me any idea how my chances would be with these stats?

10 AP classes at the end of senior year
AP Physics (E/M and mechanics), BC calc, Bio, World history - 5
AP Language, AP US government - 4
taking multivariable calculus w/ differential equations as well as quantum physics

Top 5% of graduating class

SAT 2270 (800M, 760V, 710W)
SATII Math IIC 790, Bio 780, Phys 760
Unweighted GPA 3.91
weighted GPA 4.73

President of Math Honors Society
Vice Prez of Math Team
VP of Asian American club
Leader of an asian american student union
various other leaderships/clubs

if you scroll down/up you notice that we havent heard back from adm officer for a quite sometime now and I doubt he/she will give you her evaluation.

Dylin I'd say you would get accepted. The only freak accident that might happen is if they think you're too qualified.

I think its funny how people who are overqualified and even know it themselves, still get insecure about their grades/stats/academic record/activities... to the point that they'd ask people to evaluate it. Do you need more reassurance that your GPA is high enough... or your presidencies/vice-presidencies are enough... and your post-Calculus 2 classes... or your nearly perfect SATs. Hah.

Well, I can see how you guys are still worrying about this... but I'm pretty sure you'd get in. Carnegie Mellon isn' t too selective of a school. (Since I got in last year... haha.) They don't give very good financial aid though, which is one reason why I didn't go there. Anyhow, you shouldn't worry too much about your stats, its pretty high up there as is.

At the bottom of the web page on standardized tests, its says "only junior or senior test results are acceptable"

I'm currently a junior. I took the Physics SAT II freshman year, and the Math Level 2 SAT II my sophmore year. I also took the SAT I and got an 800 on the Math my sophmore year. I thought I'd finish my exams early so that I can focus on AP's.

Does this mean I have to retake all of these exams in order to apply to CMU? Why is this requirement in there when the college board recommendeds taking them after finishing the relevant class.

Thanks

I think thats reffering to transfer students... ? I dunno mate, give em a ring, definately, cause what you say makes sense.

Yea they take your SAT II's anytime in high school if you are a freshman applicant.

It is now Monday. Have all the acceptances been sent out?

Hi, Taxguy. I don't know what your D's SAT's were, but my D's were in the bottom 25%ile and she got in! They are looking for girls, so keep up hope! But I must admit, she is having a hard time at CMU (now a Sophomore). You have to be able to deal with other students performing much better than yourself. EGO strength is VERY important. Fortunately, my D is very resourceful and as the third and youngest sibling to two IVY league brothers, she has been able to handle MAJOR disappointments and still hang in for the long haul. It may not be much of a consolation I am sure, but I do think it is something to consider. It is a VERY tough school.

What's your daughter studying? My daughter is thinking about applying to Tepper. She just took the SAT today and thinks she blew the math (maybe 650?) but did really well in the other two sections (maybe mid to high 700s?) With a 3.5 uw and 3.9 w would she have a chance at Tepper? What about ED? And is it nurturing at all? Do they offer extra help in math? She knows math isn't her forte but wants to major in marketing.

ED will definitely help her. Since she is a junior I think there is still time to retake the SATs. I do not know her rank or competitiveness of high school so the 3.5 can be either seen as low or just slightly low (made up with essays, recs, E.C.'s, or SATs).

There are free self-tutor math sections here at CMU but I don't know if that is what you are asking about. I would concentrate on getting in first and maybe hire a SAT company or just start studying a lot.

Get a 2100+, write great essays, ED I, and I think she will probably get in.

Does the 2100+ have to include over 700 in math? I know CMU is quantitative but she knows math isn't her forte and wants to do something like marketing. If she gets let's say 750 CR and 650 M and over 700 W does that count as 2100+?

Because there is some funny stuff associating the program with CMU's college application process, I am somewhat(though not really.) lost.

How does the Summer Program's application process work? are the aplicant's judged as if they were applying for the college program? or do they base their decision knowing that its just for their summer program? If its the second possibility, then how does it tie in with CMU's college application process?

Carnegie Mellon Admission,
Does CMU award merit aid to students in their second or following years, even if they don't get any, when they are admitted? If they do, what are the requirements? Mainly what do they look for?

The Pre-College APEA program is less selective and easier to get into than applying to CMU for college because there is less applicants. The application is shorter than college applications but I remember needing a Teacher Rec, Advisor Rec, Essay, SAT scores (although I only faxed my printed out online version) and a transcript. I applied June 8th (after the 2nd deadline) and still got in so as long as you're a good student I don't think it's that hard to get into.

how does the "EA" portion of the program work?

How do I know If my chedule has been aproved? And as many people have asked -when on august 1st are we allowed to start registering?

CMU rep,

How seriously are freshman high school grades looked at? Because my gpa was around a 3.3 freshman year (death in the family) but then it went up to 3.7 sophmore and junior year (all un weighed). Will the freshman grades kill my chances of being accepted? I will apply to CIT, if that makes a difference. Also, I would like to add that I have wanted to go to CMU since I was in around 8th grade...its been my dream. Thanks for the help.

Answer to collegefreak: Not very seriously if at all. I know this because 1. They say they don't weigh freshman year grades and 2. An increase in soph/junior/senior years will be the focus of the application. Also I have a friend here who had around a 2.5 and then raised it to 3.8s and was accepted to Tepper. They really don't care much about your freshman year if at all. The only exception is if you regressed from like a 4.0 to 3.5s and lower in subsequent years.
