According to UCLA's Housing website, it states that move in day is usually 6 to 7 days before the first day of instruction which will be 9/24/2012. So, move in day should be around 9/17 & 9/18 (Mon & Tues). We live out of state and would like to make our plane reservations. We are thinking about coming in the Fri before (9/14) so we can go shopping for all the dorm essentials. Does this make sense?

Last year, my student moved in on the Wednesday, a week before Fall quarter started. UCLA housing will notify your student assigned move-in date, your student can change the date later. I think if you can move in a week before instruction starts, then use the rest of the week to get some dorm essentials, that should be enough. There is also Traget day that students can get a ride to Target store to get things.

Move in typically begins the weekend before instructions begins.

According to the 2012-2013 Calendar on the Registrar’s website, instruction begins on ** Thursday, September 27**, not the 24th. Classes begin on the 27th. The 2 days of instruction (Thursday and Friday) on this week constitute Week 0. It’s the easy week that almost everybody loves. Week 1 begins on the following Monday.

Consequently, following my reasoning, people usually begin moving in on 21st or 22nd (Friday or Saturday). People who participate in athletics, move in assistance, or marching band move in a couple days earlier. Students are assigned dates and time intervals when you can move in (print out a free parking pass). Housing tries to stagger the times so that a great influx of students do not appear at some random hour. You can change your assigned time when you are first assigned one, but the options do fill up, and some times will be full. Either way, Housing usually does not regulate who comes when. Just come some time during the weekend, and your room will most likely be ready to move in.

Historically, the Target Run is the night before instruction begins, so its that Wednesday night of “zero week.” You can board a bus with hundreds of other students and shop late hours at Target (they close off shopping to the general public so only UCLA students can go and spend money, enjoy some free gifts and food). But the place is usually tight and crowded, and it would be difficult to transport large pieces of furniture since you’ll be taking a crowded bus. You can also drive there if you have a car.

Also, am I correct in assuming that UCLA2016Mom and student were planning to stay in a Hotel while shopping for dorm essentials, and wait until move in date for the student?

Since we live on the east coast and would like to make airline reservations ASAP is there a way to find out from the UCLA Housing office what day freshmen can move in and more specifically athletes?

ask UCLA housing, they are pretty good at answering questions in timely manner.

I gave a pretty good estimate above, but you can ignore it if you want.

Thank you for responding back to my original post. It was very helpful. The Target run sounds exciting!
