Welcome Week-tip sharing

I understand that we will get info about the Fed Ex boxes in July…but I would love to know how that works. I know the ROTC students help, but are they specially sized boxes, how much do they cost, and how many boxes does 1 student typically send down? Input anyone??

It’s not that you get boxes, Bloomy. You get labels specifically for your kid with a bar code that will direct the boxes to the correct destination. All the FedEx deliveries are stored in trailers near the LBC, I think, and you go there to claim the deliveries. I don’t remember helpers getting the boxes to the dorm room (FC, help me out here.). The helpers, if I recall correctly, help you unload your car and deliver those contents to the dorm room. We never used FedEx. I know FC did and experienced a bit of damage due to heavy rains.

The ROTC people do transport the boxes from the FedEx trailers to the dorm, but usually not to the room, although I have heard of some exceptions. I think maybe in Monroe especially they may take them to the room because they use the elevators and everyone else is supposed to use the steps, in order to keep things moving along better.

The boxes can be whatever FedEx allows, they don’t have to be FedEx manufactured boxes. So you can buy the boxes at any self storage place. You are correct that my D’s first move-in there were torrential rains somewhere along the way (not the day of move-in) and some things were damaged. Nothing too serious, but it was quite annoying. But I also should have packed them better - live and learn. Therefore I suggest that you pack the boxes in such a way that there is as much protection as possible, maybe some plastic liner.

A plastic liner is a great idea! Great tip…

The advice here is most helpful. However, I am locked in a state of complete indecision, as my son applied for the NOLA Experience program, and they don’t tell us if he’s in until June 19. Thus, while all of you smart folks are finalizing plans, we’re stuck! I guess we can (gulp!) drive . . .

newtrierdad - I am in the same boat as you…many of us are…it kills me because I am a big time planner! Not having plane tickets at this point REALLY bothers me. I feel like we will have to pay a fortune. I guess I could have book my ticket - but what if i could not get my S on the same flight…just have to wait and see about NOLA by 6/19. Is it possible to hear sooner?

We too await a decision on NOLA Exp. But my husband and I booked our flight for move in. If D2 is not accepted to NOLA Exp AND she can’t get on our flight, she will get on another one and grab a cab. Of course, fingers are crossed for NOLA Exp!!!

Calmomofthree - where do I find this newsletter? Thanks.

I did what Vitrac did. Booked mine and will wait re his.

Rydert: it is in your child’s Tulane email account, subject is Navigator I think.

Thanks Kreativekat. D and I are heading to NOLA on Sunday for Orientation. I have never been on campus before - looking forward to it.

Found out today that if they get accepted to the NOLA Experience, they move into their dorm at that point (with whatever you send down in advance). Then, when you arrive for move-in weekend you help them with whatever you might buy locally.

Good to know, since I wasn’t sure if they’d stay in a hotel or what.

Get in line for move in 1/2 hr before it starts. Trust me on this one.

I’m getting there on Thursday.

You don’t need to get in line on Thursday ;)

BTW- when they send the bright orange Fedex labels with your kiddo’s name/mailbox # on them (assume they are still orange) Keep the extras and use them when you ship other packages that freshman year. They came in handy and it makes it easier for the post office people in Tulane’s mailroom to find them .

Great tips! Thanks!

Thanks to the great advice from so many of you, got a room at the Marriott on Canal St. through Priceline for $70/night and Hertz economy rental through Hotwire for $15/day.
Thanks again.

southwest has a huge sale for the fall…starts on 8/26…I got nonstop flight for $129 from New Orleans back home to LAX.
Now my question is when is the semester over. Could they really take tests til Dec 19…the sale lasts through Dec 18…
I am tempted to book a flight on Dec 18 in the hope that this will work…if not then I could cancel and rebook…SWA does not punish.

I’d do it. You may have to pay a higher fare for that return ticket if you rebook it, but thats a GREAT sale price. Heres the fall academic calendar [Office of the Registrar | Tulane University - New Orleans, LA](http://registrar.tulane.edu/academic_calendars/academic_calendar_201330)

The 19th is for the law school. For undergrad exams end December 17th at 5:00 PM, although clearly he could be done some days before that.
