Welcome Week-tip sharing

Thought a tip on welcome week would be appropriate after the newsletter came out....
here is my tip...rent your car now if you need one..I checked rates...which varied dramatically....Even Costco was rather expensive....ended up booking with Hotwire...full size car was 16.95/day....rental agency ended up being Hertz. Only downside is that I had to commit now and pay in full...but I know I will be going so no big deal....

any other tips?

Do we know yet what time they will be able to start moving in? We are about 5.5 hour drive so we are considering just leaving really early that morning.

9 am. Here is a Move-in Day Schedule:

https://tulane.edu/studentaffairs/orientation/fall/upload/2013-Welcome-Week-Schedule.pdf

Read the newsletter…it has a link to a detailed schedule for the entire welcome week…7 pages with all info you need

Thanks. I read the e-mail but didn’t have time to click on all the links yet.

Thanks for the tip! I booked my flight and hotel but hadn’t rented the car yet. Will do so now.

Stupid question, but how much big stuff will we have to buy and transport down there? They have furniture in the room, right? So is it mostly bedding, towels, a lamp, and things like that? Trying to figure out what size car to get, and I’m thinking about what my son will need that would require a lot of space to bring from Bed Bath & Beyond. Sounds like a full sized car would be ok, and not an SUV?

Q: Sounds like a full sized car would be ok, and not an SUV?

A: Howdy, to each-each own…I love small car and my son being a guy does not need a lot of stuff. So, all of his personal belongings fit in my small car, Chevy Aveo…LOL…

So, all you need to bring just the bed sheet, pillows, blanket, toiletries or personal care items. And, don’t forget to bring computer, desk lamp, calendar, etc.

Since each room has microwave and fridge, your kid needs to buy snack and drinks at target or Walmart in Metairie (suburb or next town near NOLA about 4-6 miles from the school). That’s all. Y’all don’t need to sweat too much or even be stressed out with moving in.

Congratulation to all of you newcomers and Life is Good. Be blessed to y’all.

Aside from the items mentioned, we also bought extra storage containers (ie a small trunk, a flat plastic container) from BBB to store stuff under the bed. Not sure all dorms have that space-Monroe does. Maybe just girls need that extra space. A regular sized car was fine.

Under the bed storage boxes are the only ones that will work for Sharp. The beds are not loftable and are pretty low to the ground. However, the rooms in Sharp have cabinets above the bed that provide some additional storage.

Since we are talking about such lofty issues (heh, heh, heh) don’t forget that you can shop ahead at any local Bed, Bath & Beyond or online at the same and have it delivered to the one in Metarie for pick-up. So if you want to start out with new sheets, pillows, etc. instead of taking up valuable travel space or shipping them in a FedEx box, that is a good option. Also, I think Tulane has a special night where the Target closes to the general public and opens only to local students. Do I have that last one right?

A question that gets asked every year is about shipping ahead. Tulane will send a packet in July sometime that has all the instructions for how to ship ahead FedEx with special labels. FedEx holds the boxes at a local facility (Harahan I think), and then on move-in day several huge trailers line up near the dorms and you claim your stuff. ROTC cadets are there with carts to move everything for you.

Do kids use “bed lifters?” these are cone shaped and raise the bed like 10 inches so under the bed storage becomes easier…are the sheets extra long?

Okla - how are things by you w/all the tornado damage? Hopefully you are far from the destruction!

Great tip about the rental car calmomofthree - those were the best prices I have seen! I booked a midsize for $16 a day - great deal. I didn’t book air yet - waiting to see what the deal is about NOLA experience. At least I have a car!

just booked a mid sized SUV on Hotwire -Hertz for $28 day. That is less than half of what I found using other web sites, even with discount codes! I’ve never used Hotwire before, but it sounds legit.

I also don’t know yet about NOLA but booked 2 flights on sWA and will cancel the one I don’t need…SWAWill give you full credit…good for a year

Re Hotwire…I have used it many times…never had an issue…only problem is that sale is final…so you can’t get any refund if you don’t use it …so lets hope my D will not change her mind…just kidding

Bloomy-I think bedlifters are used in Monroe, but not Sharp because the bookcase/storage units mentioned by Kreative would get in the way.

I wish people who are participating in orientation now would report to us . Too busy having fun??

I also took the mid-size SUV through Hotwire…I just need to call Hertz and make sure I can get a GPS. ;)

My son will be in Paterson (at least that’s what he requested) so I’ll find out at orientation what the particulars are at that dorm.

FC, I had also heard about ordering in advance from Bed Bath and Beyond.

My son has talked about bringing his TV and XBox and Roku. Personally I’d rather he not have the distraction of an Xbox, but what is the general situation with those? Do people really bring them to college?

You do not need to buy bed lifters for Monroe. The bed height is adjustable. If you raise it to the highest level you can get SO much stuff underneath. My D had 3 stacked plastic drawers, her luggage, a storage ottoman, plus more. We had to buy a little step stool (they sell pretty colored ones at TJ MAxx and Bed Bath and Beyond) so that she could get on the bed. Monroe beds take XL sheets. I believe that all the dorms except Sharp use XL bedding. Sharp closets do not have doors so some kids buy curtains for the doors. Also that means that you can’t use hanging shoe racks in the closets. Monroe walls are brick so buy plenty of commando strips if you want to hang anything.

mavitale - It isn’t unusual to bring those “toys”, although personally I agree with you. But I have heard that there are game playing parties in the lounges fairly often, and I am sure there is a lot of game playing in the rooms as well.

We are all booked for move-in. Got a Full Sized car from Avis for $152 for Friday - Monday. Flights on SWA from Portland, Maine to NOLA, so glad they just started flying from here!. Hotel - The Ritz (thanks to Sister’s amazing corporate rate!).

We land at 6pm on Friday and I fly back out at 5pm on Monday. I have a few touristy things that I haven’t done yet on our first few trips, so I’m going to take Sunday/Monday to knock them off my list (yes, I know it will be HOT). I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to visit once he’s there, so I have to get it in while I can!

We are planning on only bringing down clothes, laptop, etc. since we are flying. Target will be our best friend when we arrive! We may take advantage of the Fed Ex boxes for more clothes, etc. Our plan is to purchase a small TV when we get there.
