I haven't really found much info about either of the two orchestras. How competitive is it to get into either of the orchestras? Are there a lot of wellesley women who play in the MIt orch or do they usually just play in the brandeis-wellesley orch? I play violin btw,, does anyone belong to either of the two orchestra want to share info with me about them?!

I don't belong to the orchestras, but I have friends in both, and I've been to concerts put on by both groups. Brandeis definitely gets most of the Wellesley women, there is currently one Wellesley girl in the MIT orchestra, she plays violin two.

MIT is not easy to commute to for rehearsals, whereas Bdeis is. Neil Hampton and Dr. Cutter are both brilliant musicians and conductors. Hampton seems stricter, while Dr. Cutter is more on the fun side of intense. Both like things right, and Cutter is quite strict when it comes to doing things right, I think you might have more leeway and learning time in the Bdeis orchestra.

How difficult are the auditions for the two groups? (I also play violin).

No idea how difficult auditions are, but my friend is in the wellesley-brandeis orchestra (viola) and they're very good. There's a really good mixture of Wellesley and Brandeis students (with men!). It's also a good set-up because the orchestra provides a charter bus to take the students back and forth. Out of two practices a week, one is at Wellesley and one is at Brandeis.

It's not hard to get into the orchestra as a string player. Only a few Wellesley students join MIT's orchestra (they meet twice a week, plus travel time is longer). I did WBO my first semester. The pieces are challenging. They played harry potter last year I believe (or pirates of the carib... can't remember) :P

awesome! i've played pirates and harry potter before!

Pirates is awesome...what else have they played before, do you know?

Shostakovich 5th symphony, sibelius violin concerto, marimba concerto by rosauro... those are the some of the recent ones. here's a list of past pieces Past Repertory Highlights | BWO | Performing Ensembles | Department of Music | Brandeis University

What days do they (Wellesley/Brandeis Orchestra) meet? Also, how hard is it to get in for brass players? Thanks!

Wellesley-Brandeis Orchestra meets once a week (possibly Wednesday nights?). The location changes each week; so, one week at Wellesley and the next week at Brandeis. Transportation is provided. I don’t think brass is as competitive as flute, violin, etc but you do have to be a strong candidate to be accepted.
