After my overnight a couple of weeks ago, I think that Wesleyan is definitely my number one choice. There is something, however, that plagued me while talking to my host. When I asked her about any Wes traditions, she seemed confused as to what I meant. While I love Wes (truly, I do), the potential lack of traditions seem to be its only flaw (I have yet to decide how important this is to me).

Does anyone know of any Wesleyan traditions?? I heard something about a canon, but that was it...

1) Football in the middle of campus.
2) He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named Day (fka, Zonker Harris Day)
3) knowing the words to the fight song
4) WesFest
5) the South College bells
6) almost any party with the word, “Sex” or, “Naked” in it.
7) Senior Cocktails
8) hanging out on Foss Hill

JW has a pretty good list. Just to expand on some of them that might not be clear:

Zonker Harris Day: Music festival type thing. Renamed by the Uni a few years ago because they didn’t like the association with drugs, but everyone knows the real name.

South College Bells: Plays various songs when normal clock bells would just ring (on the hour, one the 15 min. at noon). Everything from the fight song to the Beatles to Disney songs. This is my favorite!

Senior Cocktails: A school sponsored series of parties for seniors over 21, where they bus us out to bars, clubs, etc for drinks (don’t worry parents; they limit how many one person can have) and dancing. It’s a really fun way to bond with the class in the last year.

I have to admit having the Football/Baseball field in the middle of the quad is amazingly appealing to sports enthusiasts. How are the sports at Wesleyan, especially football and baseball.

sports at Wes are a conundrum. the NESCAC is the best and most competitive conference in Division III, with Little Three rivals Williams and Amherst arguably two of the top five D3 programs in the country (unfortunate to have them as rivals). Wes has great success in most sports against non-conference foes, but is average in most sports in-conference. Men’s lacrosse is a perennial powerhouse, going deep in the NCAA’s regularly. Football is .500 (win half their games). Baseball is pretty good (they went to the college world series in 1994 - current GM of the San Diego Padres played on that team and has this year’s squad doing spring training WITH the Padres out in Arizona).

Overall, there is nothing better than sitting on the campus center terrace watching football in the fall, or lounging on Foss Hill watching baseball in the spring, perhaps with a good book and friends, and possibly a beer or two.
