Wesleyan Applicants Class of 2023 Discussion

Creating this discussion because there hasn’t been a lot of buzz around Wesleyan’s admissions and wanted to create a place for fellow anxiety-ridden students to communicate. Please comment any questions, comments, etc.

Thanks for starting this. S19 is applying to Wes for film studies via Questbridge RD

My son is also applying to Wes. We visited last summer and Wes had the best tour of any of the colleges we saw. He had to apply RD because we absolutely must compare financial aid offers. I know he is really hoping that Wes comes in under budget!

My son is an actor who is also interested in history and psychology. He loves the idea of all of the film projects going on at Wes and looks forward to having opportunities to get in front of a camera.

S19 notified today that he was not accepted to TAP for the November Open House. He’s okay, wasn’t expecting it. Hopefully he has better luck with the app for admission.

Heh, remember that old saying, “unlucky at love, lucky in marriage”? The open house visit is the love, the admission is the marriage. Fingers crossed for him.

DS had his alumni interview today. His first for any college, so he was a tad nervous. He relaxed and eventually had plenty to talk about (but of course, no details). Lasted about an hour at the alum’s business law firm here in TX.

anybody know if ED1 comes out on the 8th or 15Th? can someone call and ask?

@ninakatarina

What did you/your son like about the Wes tour? (I’m sure I read your review on the Co2019 thread, but couldn’t find it).

We’ve never visited, but have walked the campus virtually. Is the surrounding area fairly safe? Do people walk around at night to local eateries?

We visited on a summer day so we didn’t see the place at night or when lots of students were around.

What I liked the most was our tour guide, a sweet and bubbly junior in film/psychology. She introduced us to everyone we passed by on campus and they were all interesting and open people.

I personally hated the arts building complex - it’s a cluster of Brutalist concrete blocks and I am prejudiced against Brutalist architecture. My son loved it, how some of the buildings seemed to emerge out of the ground. We all liked the library, with its big windows on the central area, we liked the student center, Kiddo even liked the gym (and kiddo is not much of an athlete).

I really liked their ‘progressive independence’ model for student housing. We were able to tour a freshman dorm and a senior house. I like the idea that for freshman year they have someone who cleans their bathrooms and takes out trash in the common areas, but as time goes on they graduate to living in more adult circumstances in small group houses. I’ll be honest, I’ve seen prettier dorms and dorm rooms. But they seemed to have a decent amount of room. The freshman dorm we visited had a two story common room just off of the kitchen with a ton of couches. It looked like a great place to hang out and chat.

The town is utterly adorable. It’s a longish walk downhill to get there, but apparently there’s a shuttle. You can use meal card points at the restaurants and the bookstore. If you go in a car, make sure you feed the meters. I didn’t feed the meter enough and got a $10 ticket when we decided to take a stroll after lunch. The town looked very safe and prosperous. You can probably google a crime heat map to be sure, but from our short visit it looked like a very nice place.

I’ll be rooting for you, @romns116 - you find out on Monday, right?

Thanks @ninakatarina !

Yes, Monday. But DS ranked only 3 schools (USC, Y, S), and USC SCA at that. All sub 5%, so I’ve tried to help him temper expectations.

The teachers and students have never heard of it, so DS was asked to lead a QB info session at his small school.

If things work out, our sons may bump into each other at Wes (acting & film). How cool! Your son seems destined for greatness, I’ve followed your posts. Good luck!

Wes alum here, with a son applying RD.

The CFA (arts buildings) sort of grows on you.

We were in Middletown a few weeks ago, staying in the hotel downtown for my son’s visit and interview. I felt perfectly safe walking to dinner and coffee after dark. Actually, I felt safe 35+ years ago, too and the downtown wasn’t as nice. Shuttle! Ha! We walked and we liked it!

The housing progression from dorms to houses was basically the same then as now, although they didn’t make a big deal out of how it was this system for increasing independence, it was just how things worked. I thought it was great! I lived in a dorm freshman year, a woodframe house sophomore year (special interest house), back in the dorm junior year as an RA and then a woodframe house again senior year. I appreciated the independence, the flexibility, being able to cook instead of always having to eat in the dining hall and choosing who I lived with. It does require a certain level of maturity to be able to negotiate use and care of the common spaces in a house in a way that’s different from being in a dorm.

I’m doing the math. We were in same years (+/-). My spud applied (ED). I feel old but was amazed how much looks the same these years later. Good luck!

Hello! I just got accepted to Wesleyan as the class of 2023 through early decision. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about my experience or the admission process.

My son applied RD. Two tours including one interview. He has gotten acceptances from other schools already. Somee were RD and some were EA. Does Wesleyan really wait until March to notify RD applicants?

@Territapper Wesleyan does not have rolling RD… Wes releases all of its RD decisions at the end of March (wth the except of some “early-writes” who get notified a few weeks earlier). Most of Wesleyan’s peer schools also release their RD decisions in one big batch at the end of March. Best of luck to your son!

Thanks, I was just wondering if they would let applicants know any earlier like some of the other regular decision schools. Guess we’ll wait until March.

@TerritapperI think I read somewhere that they might send likely letters (i could be very mistaken). But even then it’s not rolling, it’s just like a week early lol

Anybody know around when ED2 comes out? Like the date last year or the year before?

Hi, on the website it says Feb 15. But I think ED1 this year came out earlier than the date listed on the website. Are you doing ED2? I am too!
