Wesleyan Freeman Scholarship Finalists: UNITE!

Hi Freemans :) I posted the 1st message on the Yahoo Groups Iwan set up (go join!!) (:
Hope to catch up with you all there and on msn/aol im (:

sorry for my language...... i m just too..... i just cant control my excitement after receiving my wes' and duke offers!

by the way, i will definitely go to wesleyan, just because i m an avid learner, i believe a liberal art education can secure my future success and prominence. wes' will suit me because i m a hardcore student. i dont know if u are or not, but for me it is certainly the case :)

Kai Shi: I'd would love to join the Yahoo Group you mentioned, but I can't seem to find it. A search on Yahoo only turned up a site set up by Anand.... Point me with a link please.

eric: i set up the yahoo group. didn't u receive an e-mail from ms (or mrs? can someone pls answer this? :) ) overton? can u just PM me ur e-mail address eric? then i can invite u to the e-group.. anand has e-mailed me saying that he'll join my e-group and abandon his also-newly-formed group..

wallace: well, congratz. though i must say that all of us here are avid learners too, aren't we? :D

btw, do u realize that our thread has become one of the most popular thread here? we only lost to the indian thread and the singaporean connection :) it's so sad that soon enough, this thread will be obsolete and replaced by the e-group! heh..

Well, Iwan, before that happens, I better post this here... since you haven't been replying to my SMS-es, I hope you'll reply to my CC post! Hmph.

When will you have to be in the States (1) if you attend the ESL, and (2) if you don't? The Language and Thinking workshop at Bard begins on August 8. I do hope we can go to NY together!

oops sorry, wuiming.. i forgot to reply to your last SMS.. i'll send my reply, like, now.. heh..

Iwan, I've posted my email address on this thread at least twice already, is there really a need for me to PM it to you once again?

This is just to clarify that Wallace_lpc is not the one who receive Wesleyan Asian Freeman Scholarship. I am very unhappy and feel offended by someone who has stolen my name and speaks publicly on something which I will never say in my life. And, I hope that person does not do that again for this has greatly damage my credibility and has already caused an incorrigible damage between ny future schoolmates and I. I know it is useless in posting this message here for I do not know who that person is, but I am very upset when poeple point anything on that person, it is just like pointing at me and accusing me on something I have not mentioned.

I sincerely hope that this will not happen again.

hmm.. interesting.. well anyway, why don't u join the freeman scholars newly-formed e-group? e-mail me at e1dj86@yahoo.com.sg, stating ur full name n e-mail address, n i'll invite u to the yahoo group. remember: e1dj86@yahoo.com.sg ! :)

Hey, everybody! I'm a Malaysian student wanting to apply to the Freeman Asian Scholars program. I know they prefer students who still live in their home countries (I'm living in Romania cause my dad's a diplomat) but is EVERYBODY here still a resident in their home country? Were any of the other finalists living overseas?

I was just wondering if any of you had any stats or tips for the type of person the Freemans are lookin' for for this Scholarship program. I'm a little weak academically and I'm not sure I would be a good representative of Malaysia compared to others...

Either way, congratulations to all of you!

Hello IzzyJ,

I do not think that the program necessarily discriminates against those who are not studying in their home countries. This year alone there was chosen a South Korean living in Venezuela, a Taiwanese studying in Japan, and a Japanese who
lived in Europe. Furthermore, every year there seems to be a couple of ASEAN scholars too.

The Freemans do not only look at academic performance. Rather more important is what you as an individual can bring to Wesleyan. Think about that as you make your application.

I'll be happy to speak with you more over MSN, my email address:
Bootingravy AT hotmail DOT com

Regards,
Eric Sia
Malaysia

That's pretty cool. a little less apprehensive over my chances

But here's something kind of...bad. I don't speak Malay fluently. cringe So that would be like "What the hell are you doing even applying for this Freeman Asian Scholars Programs???? You're suppose to re-pre-zent, girl!" to which I can only weakly reply "I never formally learned it in school...and I forgot my Malay once I started learning English...I'm not linguistically inclined..." and cower...

HI, this is Ben, a freshman-would-be.
So what is so good about Wesleyan? Any strong departments?
And Can you guys share with us what kind of questions you were asked in the interview?

Sorry Ben, seems like no one ever visits here anymore.

Anyway, to answer your queries.

What I like about Wesleyan is the size, it's small enough that you don't feel like you're drowning in a sea of faces. The campus is beautiful, especially Foss Hill in the fall. Being situated in a small town is nice for that campus feel, and having Boston and New York both about 2 hours away by bus means you can get away during the weekends for some city atmosphere.

The strong and popular departments, as far as I know, are the government, history, and film studies. I do not personally know much about them, as I have always intended to be a Physics major. In that vein, the Physics department here is small but strong. Undergraduates have more chance to get involved in actual research with the professors. I am sure this is true for the other sciences as well.

As for the interview, it was more of just a friendly chat to get to know you better. For my interview we talked about Taekwon-do, Chinese Chess, my hobbies, my family, what I would like to study, why I would like to study it, why I think Wesleyan would be a good place to do that at, stuff like that.

i've won guys...give it up

won what?

how is that pertinent to this thread?

wow, it was like only yesterday when you guys where interviewed.
my interview's this friday!!! goes crazy any tips? :)
