Wesleyan University Spring 2013 Transfer Thread

Hey guys!
I applied to Wesleyan for the Spring, and since we're hearing back so soon... I thought I would make a thread!
Any other spring transfers out there?

@kimonoxx Yep. Getting really nervous because I really want to go to Wes. My best friend goes there and had a great time when I visited last year.

Awesome! Where are you applying from? I’m so nervous too, but am trying not to obsess hahaha. Best of luck to you!!

I’m applying from a cc. What about you? Good luck to you as well.

I’m applying from Hamilton College! Do you know if they have any transfer acclimation programs? I can’t wait to hear back!

Ah!! Did you guys get the email?? Can’t wait till Friday, I’m so nervous.

Yeah I did!! How many people do you think usually apply for spring??

i think online somewhere it said they usually get about 30 applicants for 15 spots but it changes year to year

I think they actually accept 30 to matriculate about 15…hmm.

you’re totally right on that, I was trying to recall from memory what the site said. so they say about 600 transfer applicants per year, do you think thats both spring and fall transfers?

Kimonoxx: do you mind sharing what you don’t like about Hamilton? My D is interested in both Wesleyan and Hamilton.

I think it probably does include spring & fall applicants. I know last year there were about 580 applicants for the fall, which means there are probably about 100 applicants for the spring.

@momofzag: I can definitely share my experience at Hamilton with you! I think a lot of the more liberal students at Hamilton were/are also interested in Wes. But keep in mind every person is an individual, and my own perceptions/experiences at Hamilton are certainly different than some other students here. I have many friends who are extremely happy here and would absolutely choose Hamilton if they had the chance to do it again. The main frustration I had my freshman year was the social divisions on campus – the “Dark Side” (Kirkland campus) and “Light Side” (Hamilton campus) largely divide the school into the stereotypically artsy/musically-inclined students and the athletic/science-oriented students. It felt like two separate campuses to me. However, at Wesleyan, their cafeteria is literally divided into one section for athletes and one for non-athletes, which is something to consider. At Hamilton, there are also plenty of people who are involved on both sides of campus at Hamilton, for example, jocks who are in a cappella groups, and frat boys who are Art majors. However, the Greek life is also MUCH more prominent at Hamilton than they advertise in their tours, which, for some people, is an attractive quality, but personally, I really wanted to engage with a very socially independent group of students when I went to college.

Although I initially applied to transfer for those reasons, they really didn’t bother me much this year. I think it just takes a while for some people to find their niche. However, I’m still applying to transfer, mainly because of the Arts program. I’m a Studio Art/Dance major, and the Arts department here is just not very strong. However, the Sciences here are very strong (as are the Sciences at Wes–but I think Hamilton probably has a higher chance of getting into the student research programs over the summers, if you are interested in that, because Wes is a bigger school), and the writing programs here are exceptional (we are #2 in the country for writing.) Another thing to keep in mind-- I have a friend who transferred to Wesleyan from Hamilton, and he was experiencing frustration with the larger class sizes than the ones at Hamilton, and the less single-student attention.

So there are definitely pros/cons to both schools, and for me, the pros for Wes outweigh the cons. If you have any more questions/more specific questions to certain majors/aspects of campus life, please feel free to ask!

Thank you Kimonoxx.

Your perceptions resonate with me. My D is interested in theatre/dance (along with history, poly sci, perhaps psychology). So while she loved campus/feel of place during visit, we have had a concern about lack of arts scene / size of those departments.

I was hoping that the new museum and construction of new arts building indicated some renewed investment / invigoration in those areas but maybe that just hasn’t happened yet…

The new museum is so beautiful, and adds a lot to the Art History department. The new arts facility will certainly add to the art program and will attract more art students, I’m sure. For me, it’s not a huge factor, because it’s not projected to be finished until my senior year. But if your daughter is entering college next year, it will be done by her sophomore year! I know that the Dance department is small in the sense that there are very few Dance majors, but I think the theater program is pretty strong. There are always plays going on, and the people involved in the program are all great people. Bon Jovi also recently held a concert to benefit Hamilton, and all of that money is going towards the Arts program and financial aid. I think that overall the school is moving more towards having a strong Arts program.

The Psychology/Neuroscience department is also really great (really difficult!) I don’t know much about the History department, unfortunately!

I just wanted to chime in here. I got waitlisted - anyone else accept or decline their offer?
Just wondering and super nervous to see the outcome.

I got in, and accepted their offer of admissions. I hope that everything works out for you! When do you hear back?

Did anyone else get in? Anyone get in from the waiting list?

My son was on the waiting list and did not get in.
