I got waitlisted at Wesleyan. Long story short, I got into Georgetown and Macaulay Honors College at Hunter, so I will be choosing between those two. But as much as I love those two schools, I had, and still have, a really special place in my heart for Wesleyan, and I'm just now realizing how disappointed I am that I didn't get in.

So is it possible to accept the spot on the waitlist and also commit to a different school, and then just cut my loses with the other school's initial deposit? Also how likely is it to get off of the waitlist at Wesleyan? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

I was waitlisted at Williams and Wesleyan, which were my top choices. I know how you feel!

If you are waitlisted, you are expected to commit/make a deposit elsewhere. After Wesleyan gets their commitments (May 1st), the admissions committee will reconvene and evaluate the waitlisted candidates to fill any “holes” in the class. From what I understand, there is only so much you can do to affect the process at this point. While you should certainly express that Wesleyan is your top choice and update the university on your latest achievements, the committee is looking for specific types of students now. I think getting in off of the waitlist is more about chance than anything else. Still, it sounds like you have some great options - good luck to you!

Thank you! I know that there is a slim to none chance that I’ll even get into Wesleyan off the wait list, and I’m not even sure if it is my first choice. I didn’t feel anything about the decision until the next day when I was admitted to Georgetown and I realized how happy it had made me, and how happy the possiblity of going to Wesleyan would have made me. I wish I could choose Wesleyan over Georgetown now, especially since Georgetown is harder to get into, too bad that isn’t an option. Just goes to show you what a lottery this entire process is…

So what can I do to get off of the wait list? Write a letter of intent?

It does feel quite random and it just gets more so every year…

Just FYI: The waitlist is not binding, so if Wesleyan admits you later and you already love Georgetown, you can always just turn down the new offer.

I believe we will be receiving a packet in the mail soon about the waitlist that will hopefully answer our questions. I did write a letter a few days ago to Williams because they asked for one (if I wanted to stay on the waitlist). I don’t think doing the same thing for Wesleyan could hurt, but we might want to wait until we get the mailed info.

Yeah, I think I’m just going to accept the wait list for the hell of it, just to see what will happen, because I really do love Wesleyan. But I’m so unsure about Georgetown and Macaulay and everything, so we’ll have to see how the accepted students days go. Thank you for your help, and best of luck to you in your choices and wait list situations!

I was admitted to Macaulay Hunter and Wesleyan(was going to apply to Georgetown but decided against it.) Right now, it doesn’t look as if I’ll be attending Wesleyan- it was my top choice as well, but I have better financial offers, and I don’t want to go waist deep in debt for undergrad. Just relay to them how much you want to go to wesleyan, which is all you can do at this point. Good luck!
